About Kim

Hello, there!

I've been teaching English for fifteen years, and I truly enjoy the opportunity to connect with a student and help them to progress in reading and writing. I've also taught math up to the Algebra 1 level, and have tutored math extensively in grades 1-9.

I speak Spanish at an intermediate level of fluency, and can communicate and tutor at that level.

I look forward to talking with you about your tutoring needs. Let's figure out how to work together to move you towards your chosen goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been a certified English teacher since 2000. I taught all levels of language arts courses, from remedial to college level.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 and 2 in 2000. I have also tutored students in this material, over the course of several years. I have 22 credit hours of content area math in college, as part of my Associates degree in Passive Solar Design.

Elementary (K-6th)

Although I'm certified in Secondary English, I have worked four years in middle schools as a classroom teacher, and three more years in K-8 schools as a substitute teacher.

My college coursework included psychology and child development classes, creating curriculum for primary reading remediation, and special education strategies for K-12.

The main differences between working with 7th grade and older students, vs. K-6, is that the younger children are very literally-minded. They don't conceptualize abstractions well, so concrete examples, hands-on activities, and lots of pictures are needed.

Extra patience and incorporating fun and active games to get the little wigglers up and around can be helpful, too.

English

I've taught English for fifteen years, from remedial to college level. I'm passionate about literature and writing, and have seen my students make remarkable gains in understanding reading and improving their writing.

ESL/ESOL

15 years teaching English to students from 6th-12th grade
Two years teaching "Sheltered English" to ELL (English language learner) students
Two summers teaching adults English in after school programs or as a tutor
Taken 200 contact hours training in special needs of ELL learners

Phonics

Prior to becoming a certified English teacher, I worked as a Paraprofessional Reading Tutor in Title 1 pull-out programs in Denver. In this program, I worked with a small group of students, primarily with phonics-based programs to improve their decoding skills in reading. All of my students improved 2-3 grade levels in reading over the course of 1 year working with me.

During my teaching coursework, I minored in Reading at Metro State University. Although I finished my coursework at Regis, I value and have used the knowledge of differing approaches to reading fluency.

I don't accept the supposition that either whole language reading comprehension, or phonics based decoding, is appropriate for all students all of the time. A phonics based approach is appropriate for some students.

Reading

I minored in reading in teaching coursework. I taught high school reading, literacy, and several other reading-related courses. I tutored adolescent and adults students in reading comprehension. I am an expert in quickly developing students' "inner writers" and writing strengths.

Writing

I taught English at the secondary level for 13 years. I am a blogger and creative writer. I minored in reading in my BA coursework. I am trained in Accelerated Reader, Dibels, QRI, and other reading diagnostic programs. I am also trained in 6 trait writing, Step Up to Writing, and other tried-and-true writing improvement methods.
