About Jody

Many parents wonder whether or not a phonics based reading program is the best for their child. One of the unique qualities of teaching someone to read using a phonics method is it lays a strong foundation for the 40 plus sounds in the English language. Furthermore, poor readers cannot escape the sinking hole of being a poor speller, too. As a reading specialist, I am dedicated to helping struggling readers. I teach vowel and consonant sounds, digraphs, spelling, vocabulary, affixes, and grammar. I want your student to master reading and spelling strategies quickly.

Placement testing is required before tutoring begins. This test helps determine your student's phonemic awareness and learning style. I am intentional about focusing on individual needs and learning styles to foster success for every student. In addition, I provide tutoring for people of all abilities and ages.

When students don't have a strong foundation in phonics, other class subjects falter; math being one of them. Let your child amaze you! Reading begins within the first few lessons. Proudly, I have helped many struggling readers make it on the honor roll soon after tutoring begins. I love the rewards of seeing them succeed.

My previous work history includes teaching in the classroom for 10 years. Most of my tutoring experience has come from working in a lead position for a world renowned tutoring company.

I would like to get more experience tutoring reading and spelling via internet calling. This is a great venue for distance learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 10 years of experience as the primary teacher in a local school. My primary teaching duties included grammar, reading, phonics, penmanship, essay writing, elementary math, science, history, and research.

In addition, I have experience working with a world-wide tutoring company as lead assistant. The center's focus is progressive learning for pre-K through college in math and reading.

Elementary Math

I taught in the elementary classroom for 10 years. As the primary teacher I taught elementary math. In addition to my teaching experience, I have worked for over 5 years at my local Kumon Reading Math center.

I'll teach your child to develop mental calculation skills, improve concentration ability and boost critical thinking skills.

I like students to work at their own pace so they master each new concept before moving on. My experience shows children accelerate in important math skills and begin to build confidence.

The areas I tutor in elementary math are counting and number sequencing, basic math of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I also teach fractions, decimals, order of operations, positive and negative numbers, and solving equations.

Grammar

The topics I focus on are adverbs and adjectives, articles, conjunctions, interjections, nouns, prepositions, verbs, and pronouns.

In addition, I tutor punctuation, the mechanics of sentence structure, spelling, and sentence style and clarity.

Incremental steps are taken to develop each student's writing skills in compositions, organization and development of ideas, and revising and editing.

Phonics

I have 10 years experience as a reading specialist in the elementary classroom. I tutor with a research-based instruction that has proven results. It is a complementary enhancement to basals. The concepts are introduced incrementally, ensuring long-term achievement. My key to success is the explicit instruction in critical foundational skills such as high-frequency words, phonics and phonemic awareness, spelling, alphabetizing, handwriting, and fluency instruction.

I have taught hundreds of students using this method, and I continue to use it. It is an effective reading program for young preschoolers through adults.

Spelling

The five essential areas critical to spelling and reading skills are phonemic awareness, phonics fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.

At the early primary level (K-3), it is particularly important to emphasize phonics and phonemic awareness. Perhaps the most revealing evidence is phonics students do better on word analysis skills, spelling and decoding.

The importance of these individual components
of phonics and spelling is the relationship between the use of various phonics and spelling program components and gains in a student's phonics, reading, and spelling performance. Furthermore, the percent of lessons completed in a phonics and spelling program is a strong predictor of student gains in performance – the more lessons completed, the greater the improvement.

I tutor students in more than 40 different sounds, and more than 25 spelling rules. This is a comprehensive, short-term set of lessons for all levels.

Study Skills

The initial aspects to good study skills are establishing a good study environment that has all the supplies needed to study at home. A well lit and quiet place to study is important for good study habits.

Next, is managing your study time by scheduling study time for homework and other school related projects and activities. Students are taught to develop strategies to keep up-to-date information for all homework assignments and upcoming reports and tests.

Also, I foster studying goals by formulating goals for assignments and/or tests coming due in the next week or month.

School study skills are just as important as home study skills. Showing students that reading and previewing class materials before the lecture makes note taking less stressful. I work with students to listen carefully to lectures, taking notes on important facts and the main ideas talked about in the classroom.

Textbook study skills are broken down into making outlines on important facts and points.

Finally, understanding the success of test studying skills and test taking skills. Students learn to use the outlines of important facts to study from. When test day comes, students have step-by-step techniques when taking true/false, multiple choice, essay, matching and oral tests.

Writing

All of my writing clients are taught to construct a meaningful paragraph structure to a final essay. Students are instructed to recognize the main idea and purpose of their writing project. They learn to develop a solid opening paragraph, the body of the essay with supporting details, and a strong concluding paragraph. Grammar and vocabulary are also an important focus for writing a great paper.
Often library research is required to write an outstanding essay, so I help students with the steps of finding research materials.
