I am a tutor with strong English, Literature, Writing and Art History skills looking to assist students in the Denver area that may want some extra help with test prep, paper editing, or critical reading skill development. Though I specialize in these areas, I am also available for general after school tutoring in all subjects up through high school level (with the exceptions of calculus and physics). I have extensive experience with children of all ages and love helping them learn to love reading like I do.
As each student is different, I will work with you individually to determine the most effective way to move forward and improve the skills you or your child wish to work on while keeping you (them) engaged and challenged. I am friendly and flexible, and will happily adapt as needed to best suit you. Regular feedback and communication will be requested to ensure that you are satisfied with the tutoring sessions!
I have always had a natural affinity for language and vocabulary-- I absolutely love to read, and have since I was 5. I scored a 760 on the reading portion of the SAT (way back when, now), and graduated with Anthropology and Art History degrees from Cornell University in 2013. Most of my academic career has been writing-heavy, and I have always been the editor for my friends and colleagues when they need help with papers, resumes, applications, etc. I would love the opportunity to help students learn to understand and gain an appreciation for English and writing as essential skills for everyday success.
I majored in Art History as an undergraduate, and received my Master's degree in Art Business in May of 2015. Currently I am a full-time employee in a research capacity at a Denver-area museum, and have a true passion for art in all of its various facets. The areas that I am most familiar with include Modern art (and some Contemporary), Classical and Renaissance art, and South and Southeast Asian art, though I am happy to tackle any subject matter pertaining to art history as the fundamentals remain the same and I love researching new areas of the art world!
Because I work full time, I am available mostly evenings and weekends, but could potentially make limited exceptions depending on your needs. I would love to help you reach your potential, whether that is preparing for a standardized test, streamlining a college or job application, editing a term paper, or just a little extra assistance with coursework that is giving you trouble. Please contact me at any time so we can get started! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I do not remember my section scores, but I received a 31 overall on the ACT when I took it, and a 2100 on the SAT. I am happy to work through practice tests with your son, as well as think of more creative ways to increase confidence and competence so the pressure of the tests themselves is more manageable.
I have both a bachelors and a masters in the arts, which were heavily reading/writing focused. Additionally I am an avid reader of most genres and will happily read any assigned books concurrently with your child in order to be prepared to discuss it with them in better detail.
