Hello, my name is Derek and I am new to tutoring officially, but for years my peers have been consulting me regarding many things, like proofreading their papers, instruction on how to improve a drawing, how to manipulate tools in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. I have a Bachelor's in Illustration from which I developed a multitude of visual arts skills that I am willing to use to assist others realize their creativity.
I also possess a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, with an emphasis in Expressive Arts Therapy. This means that I can integrate creative methods, like art, music, and writing, into a therapeutically beneficial process. Primarily, regarding tutoring, this allows me to find a way to work well with most people, and can probably even tutor psychology a bit if I refresh my memory banks.
I am very detail-oriented when reading other's work, and therefore there is almost never a comma out of place that I don't catch. I have a tendency, also, to try to find the best way to convey information if a sentence is confusing. I have had to write a great deal to get a Master's degree, my thesis being the largest piece of professionally written work I have completed.
I love Illustrator and I use it for anything that requires typography or graphic design like things, such as logos. I have been working with it for a long time and feel proficient enough to explain the tools to help others. Even when I was still attending art school my peers would ask my how to manipulate the program.
My BFA in Illustration has left me with many art skills I am happy to share. I am not a harsh person, quite the opposite, so I am willing to work with the goals of the student, and ensure to stay positive when assisting in the student's art execution. I also possess a relatively large collection of art instruction books for many disciplines, which I would be happy to share with my students during sessions, and even make copies.
I am kind and knowledgeable about many things, and it is my pleasure to share my skills and knowledge as needed to those that request it. Whether you want to improve your art, your writing, or simply learn to use Photoshop, I can help. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
