About Dave

I have tutored chemistry and particularly Organic Chemistry for over 14 years. I've held teaching fellowships at some of the world's highest ranked institutions including a post-doc at CalTech in addition to my graduate teaching at Princeton and Rochester. I have taught anywhere from one student to 200, including hourly lectures, as lab coordinator, & recitation head. But I most enjoy the satisfying one-on-one interpersonal process I have with students.

Most get A's and B's based simply on the effort they choose to put in after meeting which I make as simple as possible. I provide the tools and unspoken rules in step-by-step, straightforward language and demonstration. I have held University faculty positions in New York and Colorado. As a part-time passion, I still very much enjoy connecting with students from diverse backgrounds and with special needs. I find that my new association with Wyzant is a wonderful place to connect. I offer online tutoring as well--which takes place here on Wyzant's superb site--in a classroom for two with whiteboard and instant document exchange--instead of a commute to a crowded and noisy coffee shop or library. It's more convenient, distraction free, and even costs less (40$/hr).

I recommend you hire a tutor with at least a master's degree and who's undergone the hardship and understands the minor details that are now slowing or preventing your progress. In my years of college instruction, I've found that a focus on the fundamentals and a well-developed philosophy using simple-language-based teaching can make any student independent and/or superior in this subject. If you don't feel you've made substantial or even 180 degree total improvement, I'll cancel the transaction and refund your money no questions asked. Feel free to shop and compare. It is your right to the best tutoring available.

I look forward to meeting with you and creating a friendly and comfortable environment for you to learn at your pace, build your confidence and to show you everything you need to know (and also what you don't). I look forward to hearing from you and discussing your needs to provide you with the best service around.

Actual student review: "I cannot believe that what you present is the subject that my professor pretends he's teaching. You saved my grade and my graduation. I would never have passed organic without your help. I've recommended you to all my friends and would do so for anyone in my situation." Jennifer T. (Stanford University)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I started out as a biology major in college which I have tutored since my freshman year. I moved on to biochemistry which I also tutor and then settled on organic chemistry which I realized is the foundation of all these subjects and was the focus of my graduate studies. I have taught for the Princeton Review's preparatory course in Biological Sciences for the medical college admissions test (MCAT).

GRE

I completed the GRE which led to my selection of top choices for graduate study. I scored in the 98% percentile in verbal section (top 2% in the country) and in the 86th percentile for Quantitative reasoning (it is nearly impossible to get into higher percentiles ranges for quantitative reasoning due to the relative ease of that section in comparison to the entire test-taking cohort, so even a perfect score is only about a 90th percentile rank. Although the GRE has changed in recent years, I received a T in the writing portion which is essentially a perfect essay. I planned well, practiced consistently and basically "crushed" it. I can show you how to do the similarly. It is not necessarily a test of knowledge, but a test of flexibility and the rules of the test itself, which is what adequate candidacy for graduate studies is meant to assess.

MCAT

I have taken that MCAT and scored a 40. That was enough to get me accepted into medical school which I turned down to get my PHD in chemistry. I have taught for Kaplan MCAT and currently consult and write for the Princeton Review MCAT division.

Organic Chemistry

I've taught this course as university faculty. I have a Masters and a PhD so you can be assured of the highest level of accurate and timely assistance. I am pleased to work with struggling students from a wide variety of backgrounds and learning styles.
You can be confident that you are getting experienced, accurate instruction. Regardless of where you happen to be in your particular course, my focus is always to get you working independently. I love to help and look forward to working with you.

Proofreading

I am a copywriter and blogger with a broad liberal arts background including the humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences.
I can help you edit and write the best essay, personal statement, college application, or thesis you can.
I am a published author and editor who has worked for a well-known publishing company.
You need to get your important document the best first impression possible. Let me help.

Public Speaking

On the way to my PhD in Chemistry I have addressed, taught, tutored and lectured to groups of over 150 people. The best speakers read copiously, have excellent diction, and speak from their gut. Humor is also a wonderful to calm tension when appropriate. I have given talks at Toastmasters International and delivered the eulogy at my best friends funeral. As a technical speaker I am comfortable presenting research at symposiums, meetings of the American Chemical Society, and departmental seminars. In high school I was on the debate team, a member of the Junior classical League and have written speeches and prepared multimedia presentations to people I've managed at work and also to the general public by radio blog.

Writing

I tested out of all three college composition requirements as an undergrad (9 credit hours). I scored in the 98%ile on the verbal reasoning portion of the GRE (and a 760 Quantitative reasoning) and a T for writing.

Illuminates and breaks down concepts

Before going to see Dave I was extremely afraid of Organic Chemistry 2 because my foundations of Ochem 1 consisted of an accelerated 5 week summer class. This fast pace caused me to not have a deep enough understanding of the topic, but after reviewing with Dave I'm much more confident with my knowledge especially with how he broke things down in a logical manner I could follow. He ran a diagnosti
