About Karyn

Hi! My name is Karyn and I hope that I can assist you.

I am a graduate of Illinois State University and have 15 hours toward my master's in Special Education. I was a special education teacher for several years. I am a passionate advocate for students with Learning Differences. I have experience in Individualized Education, administering assessments and coaching students according to learning style strengths. It is important for these students to know how they learn best and to use those strengths to help meet their challenges. I help the student to discover his/her learning style. Therefore, lessons are individualized.

My work experience is with students at the elementary level. I have taught both regular and special education in various classroom settings. I tutor students in reading, spelling, study skills, vocabulary and writing. I will assist with math but it is not one of my strengths. My focus is individualized instruction. I develop learning strategies that will increase the likelihood of success. This is done by assessing the student's learning style as auditory, visual or kinesthetic. Behavior and concentration is also a factor in developing learning strategies. I also expect the student to take responsibility for learning and to participate fully in the tutoring process.

When I was a teenager, I decided that teaching students with learning differences was my calling. It is my passion to teach and help others succeed.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I was a special education teacher for 7 years. I have taught students with add/adhd. I have a Colorado teacher's license in Special Education. I have a passion for helping students with special needs. I have also raised two children of my own.

Dyslexia

I taught special education for 7 years. 5 of those years were with students with learning disabilities including Dyslexia. I have a Colorado teachers license in Special Education. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a concentration in Special education.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education. I have taught both special and regular ed elementary students. I treat each student as a special individual and teach according to their learning style. I taught for 7 years, have a Colorado Teachers License and I raised two children of my own.

Flute

I have played flute since I was in 5th grade. I belonged to youth orchestras and Legion Band. I trained under a professor at Northern Illinois University. I was first and second chair in my high school band.

Phonics

I have taught Special Education students for 7 years. Phonics, if the child can learn that way, is basic to learning how to read. I have used many reading development plans that are based on phonics. Phonics can also be paired with other reading strategies that will reinforce learning. Not every child learns the same way.

Special Needs

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and taught special needs students for 7 years. I taught the mentally challenged for 2 years and learning disabled for 5 years. I currently have a general special education teaching license in the state of Colorado.

Study Skills

I taught special education students for 7 years. A typical area of weakness for these students is study skills. I have written many lesson plans and developed strategies in this area. Simple organization is key. Each student will have an individualized strategy that works specifically for him/her.
