Hello! I am an experienced tutor with excellent test scores and multidisciplinary expertise. I am dedicated to helping every kind of student achieve excellence while finding joy in difficult content. My knowledge of psychology and curriculum design allows me to use science-backed methods to ensure learning is engaging, efficient, and long-lasting.

A Few Quick Facts: 99.9th percentile SAT Score (with a perfect score on the Writing Test) — Awarded full-ride merit scholarship to attend any college in Colorado — Have taught or tutored over 250 students in the last 5 years (aged 4 through 32) — Aced over 15 graduate courses (as an undergrad)

A bit about my experience: From 2016-2020 I triple-majored in Neuroscience, Mathematics, and Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder, which I attended on an elite, full-ride scholarship (the Boettcher Scholarship) awarded for academic achievement and character. While in Boulder, I was a teaching assistant in philosophy and logic, the Editor-and-Chief of the Honors Journal, and a research fellow in education, psychology, and neuroscience. In both 2019 and 2020, I won awards for writing the top essay in the philosophy department. In spring of 2020, I was honored with the Jacob Van Ek award for demonstrating academic excellence and ingenuity.

In addition to my academic achievements, I have extensive teaching experience that is diverse by both subject and age group. I have been a math tutor for elementary and high school students, an undergraduate writing, science, and logic tutor, a middle school film instructor, a kindergarten teacher, and an outdoor leadership instructor. Additionally, I have expertise in curriculum design (I worked as a research fellow in a lab focused on optimizing science curriculums and designed online science courses as an intern for CU’s Provost) and in the psychology of learning (I’ve been awarded three separate research fellowships). I am dedicated to applying cutting edge science to my tutoring methods so that you or your child have the best

I was the Captain of my high school Policy Debate (CX) team for 3 years and Coach of the team for 2 years, leaving me experienced in extemporaneous argument formation as well as speech training for speed, charisma, and clarity. I am a 3-time Colorado state champion and 2-time global finalist in the DECA financial case study competition (judged based on a rapidly prepared presentation). I spent 10+ years training in theatre performance.

Elementary Science

Besides my college degree in neuroscience and a high school education full of advanced science classes (AP Chemistry, AP Physics, IB Biology), I also have research experience in k-8 science curriculum design. Through the University of Colorado's Institute of Cognitive Science, I worked with Denver teachers and computer scientists to test curriculums that integrated STEM skills (e.g. programming a sensor to detect moisture), classical science education (e.g. why does mold grow?), and independent problem solving (e.g. how would you find and prevent mold in your own school?).

As an undergraduate, I tutored college athletes who had extreme schedules and were forced to take all of their classes online. This experience helped me develop specific strategies for supplementing schoolwork that was otherwise done alone and at a distance. I have also tutored elementary and middle school students who were homeschooled, learning to work with parents to fill in their gaps in expertise and to comply with expectations that might not align with typical school curricula.

SAT Writing

I scored an 800 on the writing section when I took the test, and have since tutored over twenty college students to improve their clarity and persuasiveness as writers in both the sciences and humanities. I won two awards while in undergrad for submitting the best essays in the philosophy department, and I served as the Editor-and-Chief of my school’s Honors Journal. My experience in philosophy and logic (and debate) prepare me to offer valuable insight into effective argumentation on any subject.

As a the Humanities Editor and then Editor-and-Chief of my university’s Honors Journal, I developed strategies to combat the worst vices of academic writing at the undergraduate level and to bring out the best of my peers’ ideas. I also won two awards for submitting the top papers in the philosophy department and spent three years tutoring undergraduates in academic writing for the sciences and humanities. My experience in philosophical argumentation generalizes so that I can help you think and communicate with clarity, subtlety, and generosity no matter your subject matter. If you are most interested in technical help with writing conventions, note that I scored a perfect 800 on the SAT Writing Exam. I charge $10/page for asynchronous revision of writing on any subject.

Besides my work as a student of neuroscience, I have direct experience working with biology curriculums to improve the clarity of analogies and maximize student learning and engagement. As a research assistant in a cognitive science lab designing middle school STEM curriculums, I learned how to structure biology learning to encourage high levels of retention and understanding — my methods focus on storytelling, connection building, and independent problem solving. As a course designer for my university’s online courses, I also became fluent with the assortment of interactive biology learning tools available on the internet, so I can help you build your own arsenal of resources and grow into a more self-sufficient student.

Knowledgeable

Kelly is knowledgeable in her field and very thorough in her feedback. She is also accommodating with time constraints. I have enjoyed working with her and look forward to working with her in the future.

Knowledgeable, prepared and engaging

Kelly helped with material for my undergraduate Logic class. She is extremely well prepared and has an engaging style that nicely blends guidance provided to the student with encouragement of their active collaboration. The best tutors are those who help their students become better independent learners, and my strong impression is that Kelly does just that.

Didn’t know that tutoring could be this good.

I had Kelly give written feedback for my platonic dialogue for my honors political theory class. With her edits she provided many ways to express my ideas in a much more clearer way. She also fixed the grammar and flow of my paper. Aside from grammar, I could tell that she read and considered all of the content in my paper. She made connections and suggested additions that made my paper stronger and more focused on the prompt. Kelly knows what a good paper looks like and will make sure that your paper comes out great. She also provides big picture and stylistic comments for your papers which you can use in your own writhing to make yourself a better writer. I followed up the detailed feedback with a 30 minute online meeting and was given a lot of information to further improve my paper. In the end, my paper was still my own but was simply a whole lot better.

Tutor responded:

So glad you found my feedback useful, Michael! Thank you for this glowing review.

Amazingly thorough and prompt; much appreciated

Kelly didn't just find grammatical errors and other conventional mistakes; she helped me find my voice as a writer and allowed me to channel it towards my analysis. Thank you so much!!
