About Devin

I'm Devin. I graduated Colorado State University with a degree in wildlife biology, and decided that I really liked learning about where things are on the landscape, and various mapping techniques. I decided to pursue a more technical degree in conservation biogeography for my Masters at the University of Nevada in Reno.

While completing my program I taught undergraduate and graduate level laboratory sessions in GIS using ArcGIS, and spatial analysis using R. I've been using these programs for a few years now, and am very comfortable with the functionality as I have used them both for both school work, and in previous jobs.

I really like the collaborative appeal of tutoring. Even if the content of the problem you're having isn't something I've dealt with before, my favorite part about teaching is using and sharing my tool set to tackle new problems. Tutoring lets me expand my knowledge base at the same time I help you understand the tools better. I find it really rewarding when my students can feel confident to go on and use their new skills to address new problems also.

My research focuses on spatial variability in wildlife populations, and so I am very familiar with statistical methodology, analyzing graphs/tables, conducting complex spatial statistics using R.

I look forward to working with any of you who are interesting in learning about these tools and having some fun in the process. If you have any questions for me, or would like to schedule a time to meet up please feel free to contact me. I'm always on my email and will generally respond within the day.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

My research focuses on ecological spatial analysis and statistics. I've conducted multiple statistics based research projects since my time as an undergrad at CSU. I've taught laboratory courses in spatial analysis which incorporated a large variety of statistical methods and also dealt with interpreting scientific charts and graphs.

GIS

I instructed laboratory sessions for two different undergraduate and graduate level GIS courses while obtaining my MS in Geography. I completed analysis and data visualization in ArcGIS for reporting to multiple federal and state agencies including California Parks and Wildlife, and the United States Forest Service. I am proficient in ESRI ArcGIS products, as well as some of the other open source programs including QGIS and Grass GIS.

R

I used R for the statistics and database management of my Master's thesis project, which incorporated large data sets from multiple sources. I conducted a spatial analysis of Osprey Nests in Lake Tahoe using R for California Parks and Wildlife. I taught laboratory sessions for college undergraduate, masters, and PhD level spatial analysis courses in R.

Patient and Thorough for GIS - Spatial Analysis

Devin knows GIS very well. He's patient and thorough when explaining complex concepts and comes to sessions prepared with answers to questions. He has been able to troubleshoot all ArcGIS/ArcPro quirks, and knows alternative ways to complete tasks. Also super responsive and easy going!
