About Sarah

I am a certified teacher in elementary and special education for grades PreK-5 and just finished my sixth year teaching. I can tutor in all elementary school subjects and test prep. I often do "homework help" on weeknights so as not to make extra work for students who already have busy schedules. In these sessions I help students complete homework and do extra practice in areas where student is struggling.

The past four years I taught 4th grade, and I previously taught 2nd grade and special education for a variety of grade levels. I tutored 4th grade students one-on-one after school and also taught a standardized testing preparation program on Saturdays. In addition, I taught 4th grade remediation summer school for two of those years.

I am taking this year off of teaching to stay at home with my newborn and am available to tutor. I would prefer to tutor at my house, but I could possibly come to a school or home if located nearby.

I have taught math 4 out of my 6 years of teaching. I prefer to teach math in a hands-on way using manipulatives.

I have taught reading 6 out of my 6 years of teaching. While teaching 2nd grade, I focused on teaching phonics and basic reading skills. While teaching 4th grade, I focused on teaching comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.

I have experience teaching Common Core State Standards in reading and math. I taught Common Core standards to 4th graders in Louisiana who would be taking a Common Core based standardized test in the spring, They were required to pass the test in order to go on to 5th grade, so I had to be knowledgeable of the Common Core standards.

I am certified to teach elementary and special education for grades PreK-5. I have 6 years of teaching experience.

Please contact me in order to learn more about my teaching experience, flexible schedule, and desire to help your student improve and do his or her best in school!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have 3 years of experience teaching 4th grade Common Core standards in Louisiana. Three years ago was a transition year, with half the standards being Louisiana's old standards and half being CCSS. The last two years were completely CCSS. In order to fully understand these new standards, we examined vertical standards, meaning the grade level below (3rd) and above (5th) in order to understand what our students were learning in the past and what we needed to prepare them for in the year to come. Also, 4th grade is a high-stakes testing year in Louisiana, so the students must pass the standardized test in order to pass to the next grade. The standardized test the past 2 years covered Common Core standards, so I had to be knowledgeable and able to teach these standards to ensure my students' ability to move on to the next grade level.
