About Shea

Hi! My name is Shea H. I am a graduate of Colorado College, where I studied Creative Writing (major), and Religion (minor). With over three years of tutoring for students at all levels, I can provide students with tools for success through a supportive tutor relationship that recognizes and meets students’ needs with respect and diligence.

It’s my goal to help students navigate the complicated world of reading, writing, language and communication. I enjoy guiding others through the writing process, and helping students build essential communication skills that bring success in and out of the classroom. Relationships founded on mutual respect and commitment are a priority in all my tutoring relationships, which use a goal-oriented, step-by-step approach to achieve mastery over a variety of writing and language skills.

Last academic year, I worked as a Teacher's Aide with the Behavioral Development department at Greenwood Elementary, where I helped students – both those with behavioral challenges and those without – develop basic math, reading, writing and language skills.

I also helped these students develop social skills, discipline, and emotional regulation skills, and worked alongside other teachers to create and implement creative lesson plans tailored to the needs of students with cognitive disabilities. This position required patience, compassion, discipline, commitment, and a positive attitude.

Additionally, I have volunteered for three different extracurricular tutoring programs, providing before- and after-school tutoring for elementary, middle and high schoolers in a variety of subjects, including elementary and middle school-level math, reading and writing for all levels, and research, leadership and presentation skills at the high school level.

I have also provided editing, input and review services for peers and classmates at Colorado College and the University of Saint Thomas. These services have improved grades as well as writing quality: my classmates and peers reported that their writing assignments saw greater clarity and cohesiveness following editing and correction sessions.

My most recent work was this past summer, with an online medical company called Artius Medsoft. I held the title of “Business Development Associate,” and worked with a team of software developers and medical professionals to develop an online tool that enables providers of Complimentary and Integrative Medicine to connect more easily with clients and business associates across a number of different medical fields. I researched medical modalities and produced quality writing that assessed their validity and examined their methodologies for Artius team members and clients alike. I also spearheaded outreach communications to network with potential clients and gather information regarding client needs. This was an opportunity to hone my research, communication, writing and presentation skills, which I hope to share with students as I give them the skills to read, write, and communicate effectively.

With four years of high school Spanish at a nationally-ranked private preparatory school, my academic background makes me an excellent choice for students wishing to master skills, improve study habits, and deepen knowledge.

Extensive, immersive practice in all areas of academic Spanish has given me an understanding of the skills and practice methods necessary for successful careers in elementary, middle and high school Spanish. I understand the difficulties of mastering the building blocks of language: vocabulary, grammar, syntax and comprehension can be complex tools that require study and dedication. I also understand that, to learn effectively, students must feel supported. I am careful to recognize and incorporate individual learning styles and existing strengths and skills, in addition to unmet challenges and needs, while approaching students with patience, respect, and a concern for the learning process.

It is my goal to supply students with the skills and practice they need in order to achieve in the world of academic Spanish education, and helping students acquire valuable tools and achieve success is the primary focus of my work as a tutor. With these goals in mind, I would be excited to work with you, so that we can achieve together.

With a degree in Creative Writing, and a minor in Religion, my academic background has its emphasis on writing and research. Extensive practice in both these areas has refined my skills as a writer and a tutor. I understand that the world of writing and language can be difficult to navigate, and it is my goal to support students as they seek success in these and other areas.

I also understand that, to learn effectively, students must feel supported. I am careful to recognize and incorporate individual learning styles and existing strengths and skills, in addition to unmet challenges and needs, while approaching students with patience, respect, and a concern for the learning process.

I believe that great schoolwork is founded on attention to detail. Thoroughness is always at the center of my work, and guiding students through the revision process with an eye for the little things creates a mindset that promotes attention to quality.

Helping students acquire valuable skills and achieve success is the primary focus of my work as a tutor. With these goals in mind, I would be excited to work with you, so that we can achieve together.

Feel free to contact me to schedule a lesson. I am happy to work with students of all levels, from elementary school to college. I offer language, writing, reading, research, communication and organization tutoring for all ages. Additionally, I can offer tutoring in basic math and science at the elementary school level. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
