About Elise

I am a teacher, originally from Maryland, who works with students who are developing their English language skills. I have taught full-time for 5 years in the public school system. During that time I worked with students between Kindergarten through 8th grade.

My students have spoken many different languages and have come from places all around the world. I work with students to not only build their social and academic language, but also help acclimate new students to American culture. My hope is to build confident students who have the tools they need to succeed in all of their academic and social avenues. I also have experience teaching in other countries and have just returned from Nepal where I taught 4th,5th,6th and 8th grade. I love to travel and to learn about new places and people.

I love teaching because it gives me the opportunity to build confident and successful students. I also find that I learn so much from my students, especially about their culture and home countries. Before becoming a teacher I volunteered as an after-school reading specialist and was so excited to have the opportunity to work one-on-one with students. This allows the opportunity to provide students with the support they need individually.

I have a Bachelor's degree in communication and a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. At my previous school, I worked as the English Language Development department lead. My instruction focuses on authentic language use through reading, writing, speaking, and listening tasks tied to social and academic goals, depending on the student's needs.

My aim as a teacher is to help students reach their goals as English speakers. I have experience working with all levels of students and have watched my students grow into successful and confident language learners.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and certification in K-12 education. I taught in an ESL support role for one year in 1st-4th grade where I worked with whole class and small group. I also worked for 4 years as a 5th-8th grade classroom teacher. I have received several professional development trainings including close reading, academic language instruction, sheltered instruction, WIDA language consortium, Understanding by Design, etc.
