##### About HOANG

I was an AmeriCorps Denver Math Fellow during the 2015-2016 school year. I taught two 5th grade periods and three 6th grade periods through small group instruction. Our mission was to accelerate our students' learning towards grade level math proficiency and to close the opportunity gap. On the MAP test, my best performing 5th grade student showed 27 points of growth and my 6th grade student showed 21 points of growth from fall to spring. In addition, I was a teaching assistant for a biology II course for two years during my time at Kalamazoo College. I was responsible for creating review worksheets and holding bi-weekly sessions for students. I have also done in-home tutoring for students struggling in reading literacy.

My favorite aspect of tutoring is the personal relationship built through our time spent together. I believe that tutoring is more than just helping students learn: it is about mentoring and taking the time to know a student's strengths and weaknesses in order to cultivate a well-rounded individual. The second aspect of tutoring I enjoy is watching my students grow both in the academic sense and in their personality. Confidence is a key part of learning in my book!

I enjoy teaching students the necessary self-correction skills when solving math problems such as asking questions, estimation, and double checking their work. Math is a systematic discipline that requires students to internalize formulas and rules, so I do my best to come up with mnemonic tricks that work well for students.

I am a passionate learner about the sciences, hence why I became a Biology major. I love to help students explore their inquisitive nature, which is a critical component of the sciences. More so, I take the time to check my students understanding and to show them the connections between the different science disciplines.

My philosophy on teaching is to challenge my students in engaging ways through using relevant examples, games, and student independence. I instill in my students the required perseverance and critical thinking skills when approaching difficult problems. I am a passionate educator and would love to help you achieve your academic goals!
