About Samantha

Greetings, friends! My name is Samantha and I am a certified English teacher working in Aurora and living in Denver, Colorado. This year I am teaching 7th grade English Language Arts. Previously, I was teaching high school English, mostly 11th and 12th grade, in the Midwest (Cleveland and Detroit)! I specialize in teaching literary analysis and fostering students' development of close reading skills, such as citing strong and thorough textual evidence to support inferences drawn from a text, that will allow students to become analytical readers, writers, speakers, and listeners in preparation for what will be expected of them in college. I can also help students with grammar, vocabulary, and ACT prep.

I received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Michigan. I graduated from U of M most recently with a Master of Arts in Educational Studies, and before that with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and Women's Studies. My path to becoming an educator is defined largely by the intersection of my undergraduate degrees and passions for literature, social justice, and learning. Additionally, my interest in teaching comes from a history of working with incredible young people who have had to deal with challenging and oppressive life circumstances, as well as my profound commitment to the vision of success for every child. It is my mission to help young people realize their full potential as open-minded, curious, skeptical, imaginative, and responsible citizens who are attentive to evidence and who respect all individuals and their differences. I teach according to the belief that all students have a unique set of meaningful life experiences that they bring with them into their learning and that each one of them possess valuable knowledge and insight to contribute.

It is crucial for me, as a teacher, to get to know each one of my students on a personal level. I see this as one of my primary responsibilities. Building authentic relationships with each one of my students is, of course, a way of demonstrating interest, care, trust, and respect, of establishing a positive learning environment that encourages them to explore and take risks. I also use the relationships I build with my students to inform what and how I teach, and to challenge, engage, and empower them. I have developed skills in differentiating instruction according to individual student needs, interests, learning styles, and preferences, while never lowering my high academic expectations for any one of my students.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions! I look forward to hearing from you and being granted the opportunity to inspire curiosity, thoughtfulness, and a hunger to learn! Cheers!
