About Jane

I was born and brought up in a suburb of New York City, and have lived in Denver for many years. My late husband was a Foreign Service Officer, and we spent 3 years in Africa as well as Washington. After getting my teaching certificate and master's in teaching ESL, I taught for 5 years in Littleton, 20 years in Denver, and 9 years at the Community College of Aurora. (At CCA I taught mostly Basic Composition, Reading 090, and ESL Advanced Composition.)

I tutored in CCA's Writing Studio all of the years I was there. I love tutoring because I can focus on what students absolutely have to know, and I have become expert at guiding them towards figuring out things for themselves; for example, how to make a sentence "flow" better, how to get rid of extraneous words, and how to remain on topic in order to prove a thesis.

I love people and get along well with students; I'm also highly knowledgeable about grammar and composition and thoroughly enjoy sharing my knowledge in a way that helps students.

I retired about a year ago and have a very flexible schedule - morning, afternoon, and early evening are all fine as long as I have timely notice in case I need to change any existing plans - which I will gladly do when possible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, plus years of experience in teaching English composition and grammar. I am fully qualified for ACT tutoring.

English

English is my native language. I have been a voracious reader of American and English literature my entire life.
Furthermore, my undergraduate and graduate training have made me a very proficient writer.

ESL/ESOL

I have a master's degree in teaching ESL. I also am proficient in French, so I have a good understanding of what is involved in learning a second language. I also have more than 30 years of teaching ESL experience.

Grammar

I have taught grammar for many years. In graduate school I took a semester course in the linguistics of English. This course was, in effect, an advanced grammar course. I learned the underlying rules of English grammar, and I am able to teach the rules of grammar effectively. If one explanation with examples doesn't work, I can give another, and as many after that as are needed to help students understand.

Proofreading

After many years of reading student compositions and other writing, I usually spot typographical errors immediately. I also notice errors in sentence structure and grammar usually at the first reading. However, I always read student work at least twice.

TOEFL

I have a masters degree in teaching ESL and many years of experience in teaching both ESL and English composition and grammar. I have taught Kindergarten through community college, and have also lived in other countries.

Writing

I have taught and tutored writing for many years. I especially enjoyed my years of tutoring writing at the community college level. According to feedback from the Community College of Aurora, my graduate work and extensive teaching experience in writing have made me a highly effective writing instructor and tutor.

Jane worked with my son. He reported that he had a great experience and enjoyed working with Jane. She inquired about him and was quickly able to identify areas in which he could benefit from her support. I appreciated that she has worked with English as a second language learners and had experience working with people from other cultures and ethnic groups.
