About Jaclyn

I currently work as a the Director of Student Services at a K-8 School in Denver, CO. I was a 2011 Teach for America corps member as a Special Education teacher. I continue to teach Elementary Special education and am certified for K-12th grade. I have the most experience teaching Kindergarten through 5th grade Reading and Math. I am familiar with Common Core standards. I pride myself on my ability to build rapport and relationship with students. I currently do some tutoring throughout out the week in both Reading and Math for students in 3rd-6th grade. Helping students close gaps in their learning is such a privilege. I love that "Aha" moment that students have when something clicks and they begin making connections to previous learning.

I myself struggled with math in late elementary and middle school. I've found a lot of resources and strategies for explaining math concepts in a way that students can understand. I think it is important to teach computation step-by-step so that kids have a very clear process to follow. At the same time, it is also important to build conceptual knowledge so they can generalize their skills to new problems and situations.

I have a Master's of Education in Linguistically Diverse education. I believe it is important to recognize the impact that a student's english proficiency has on their ability to read in English. I currently teach a lot of phonics instruction, but intentionally add in reading comprehension so that student can meaningfully apply the sounds they have learned. I have access to materials for Handwriting without Tears.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Oboe

I played oboe from 6th grade until undergraduate. I participated in honors level bands/orchestras and continued lessons into my undergraduate career.

Phonics

As a Special Educator, I support students with phonics instruction from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I have experiencing creating and implementing more engaging strategies for older students who continue to struggle with mastering phonics skills. I recognize how important it is to internalize phonics in order to read fluently and engage in classroom materials.
