University of Colorado Denver (Creative writing)
I am currently a student at The University of Colorado Denver studying English-- both Creative Writing and Literature. English has always been my strongest subject and was reading at very high levels from a young age and I would love to help other students with both their reading and writing abilities. I do have experience in tutoring and editing for those people that are older and focused on writing extensive papers.
In high school I was a teachers assistant for a second grade class. I assisted in not only grading, but one one one help with students that were struggling in specific subjects usually reading and occasionally math. This one on one time usually lasted about 30 minutes to an hour and I would walk students through their trouble subject whether that was having them read to me or giving them math problems. More recently I worked on The Copper Nickel Literary Journal as a student editor so I am skilled at reading papers or stories and giving critiques about what could improve them and finding small errors that are easily fixed.
I have always excelled at English and have a lot of experience in the subject and would be very comfortable assisting students in improving in this area whether that is learning to read for the first time or improving their writing skills.
I would love to work with anyone who feels they could benefit from help with their English and reading skills and I have a fairly flexible schedule so I should not have any problems scheduling appointments during the week and weekend. I am very willing to negotiate the rate listed above especially for groups or for those looking for multiple days a week.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am currently an English major at UCD and reading has always been my top subject. I was testing in the 99th percentile since 1st grade and have always read at a much higher level than my grade. I also have a younger brother and niece and nephew who I have helped learn to read.
I have played soccer since I was four and played a few years competitively. I know basic skills along with some more specialized ones. I have also recently assisted in coaching a youth team both as a group and one on one for certain skills and positions.
