Greetings!

I believe that the journey of test prep mastery allows students an incredible opportunity to become their best selves - laying the foundations for success in the years ahead. During this process, I help students become more efficient learners by practicing smarter-not-harder study habits and teaching them executive function skills such as time management, focus, and clarifying priorities. This leads to higher grades, more free time for their interests, merit scholarships, and the energy to explore who they are becoming. I have a lot of fun with my students, but I also hold them accountable to the standard of what I know they can become. If they perform below this, I remind them of their greatness and don't let them settle for less than they can be.

With over 6 years of coaching experience, 500+ hours of nonviolent communication training, and 10 years of teaching experience, I use scientifically proven methodologies to enhance the learning experience. I use empathy to help students accept their own skill level and learning history as a jump off point to going where they want to go. This supports a baseline self-confidence that allows them to believe they can improve and grow. I create meaningful connections between what students already know and what they don't know to facilitate gradually increasing mastery of the material. When all of these factors are present, students experience the safety to enjoy their learning journey and the pride that comes from creating great results.

I also offer all students & parents a free 15-minute consultation before our session so we can make the most of our time when we are together.

I have found that students often underestimate how much work they need to do in order to reliably improve their SAT/ACT scores. I therefore set clear expectations from the start and require all students with goals of improving their score by more than 150 points to take 2 full-length practice tests worth of practice a month, correct them, and have questions prepared for our sessions.

My Philosophy & Expectations:

I believe we should never lower a goal. It's not just a number on a test, it's about who you become in the process of achieving that grade. Achieving excellence in anything is worth doing, but achieving excellence in something you learn to love is even better. I will hold you accountable to how excellent you can really become. If I see you slacking off I will remind you of how smart and powerful you are until you rise to that level. Put your best into everything you do and your life is bound for success, fulfillment, and joy.

First Session & Overall Plan

Just like a doctor gives their patients a physical exam to get the overall picture of how their health is, I start by observing the student take each section of the SAT online and from this experience I have a big-picture view of what they are doing well and not-so-well. I have them use their mouse to show me where their eyes are and have them think out loud so I can understand their thought process. While they do this, I take copious notes on their strengths and weaknesses and point out major strategies they are doing well and others they need to work on.

From this point on, I drill their weaknesses in both strategy and content. I assign them books and homework tailored to help them nullify their weaknesses and turn them into strengths as well as learn and master the content they may be a bit shaky in. I teach them tons of things during this process, how to study effectively, how to learn from their mistakes, what not to study, etc. Then I make them take a real SAT and we re-assess where they are and start over.

My Academic Background:

I currently score in the 99th percentile on reading/writing and in the 97th percentile in math on official SAT/ACT practice tests. In college, I graduated cum laude ("with honors") and received a distinguished student award for my exceptional work in my undergraduate studies. I have a degree in anthropology and minored in environmental science, and Asian studies. I went back to school for organic chemistry and performed at the top of my class.

My main job for the last decade has been mentoring youth and adults in leadership and personal growth in outdoor and academic settings. When I found Wyzant, I found a perfect platform to contribute my skills and passion by helping younger students get the head start I wish I had in my youth.

When we work together, I am committed to your success and will go the extra mile. I look forward to getting to know how I can support you to feel confident, competent, and excited about what is next for you or your children's life.

Sincerely,
-Thomas

I have been teaching accelerated learning techniques and organization skills to adults and children since 2011. Through hundreds of hours of studying productivity tips, time management, and leadeing teams, I have found universal strategies to make the study environment fun and empowering. I also know how to speed read (~1,500 words per minute), meditate, and use enhanced memory techniques to cut my study time in half and I help other students do the same.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I am a proficient writer and avid reader - writing around 2,000 words a day and reading at least 10 books a month. Since I was a young boy I always looked up the meaning of a word I didn't know, and as a writer it is deeply important to me to understand subtle distinctions between similar words. I also studied Latin for 4 years and am familiar with ancient Greek philosophy, leading me to know many roots of English words.

Highly Recommended SAT Tutor!

I contacted Thomas after my daughter took the SAT twice and her highest score on the reading/writing was 650 (15 wrong on reading and 5 wrong on writing for each SAT). For the first lesson he focused on assessing her thought process in taking the test and took detailed notes and feedback for her. She only had 4 lessons (which made me nervous) but she assured me she understood what to do. Her score went up to 730 (8 wrong on reading and only 1 wrong on grammar) thanks to Thomas! He has my highest recommendation.

Patient, explains complex topics very well

Thomas M. helped me understand strategies and methods to improve my reading scores within a couple of lessons. He has boosted my SAT reading/writing scores and my overall reading scores for school as well. In addition, he brings a very classroom approach which is organized and thrives on student based reflections periodically throughout the lesson.

Knowledgeable and supportive

Thomas first had an interview call with us, so we understood his teaching methods. This was my daughter’s first session with Thomas. He gave her homework that she jumped into quickly. We look forward to more sessions. Thank you.

Highly effective SAT tutor

Our son began working with Thomas on SAT review over last summer, before junior year. We started with an 1160 PSAT score sophomore year, and were shooting for a 200 point increase for the SAT. This past December 2017, our son scored 1360 on the official SAT. The lessons with Thomas definitely helped that happen. Having achieved the targeted point increase, we have now gone back to Thomas for more prep to hopefully score higher on the next test. Thomas is very patient, and established a great rapport with our son who really enjoys the lessons while learning very much. After the first lesson in this second round (over winter break), the feedback we received from our son is that “Thomas is a really great teacher and has shown me an excellent review method.” We definitely recommend Thomas as an SAT tutor for students who want to work hard, learn useful strategies and improve their scores. We look forward to posting again after the second official exam. Thank you, Thomas.

Great listener, patient, very informative and helpful with study skills!

Thomas gave great insight on study skills. He is a great listener and gives great feedback. Thomas is very knowledgeable on all subjects. He manages to get the student to think wiser and work harder to get the necessary information from their own memory.

Makes learning fun

Thomas has been tutoring my daughter for the SAT for months. They meet online for an hour once/week. This last time, her score went up 260 points! His easy going nature and great sense of humor make her sessions enjoyable instead of boring. I would highly recommend Thomas for Math and English tutoring. He seems well balanced in both.
