About Allena

I have loved teaching music and helping others for years. In my time as a musician I have been the lead of and taught within many different ensembles. Being a section leader gave me the chance to help others one-on-one and get experience teaching in high school and college levels. I have helped many friends in other subjects to raise their grades and be better students over all. I have expertise specifically in the saxophone, trumpet, French horn, music theory, music history, general music, English, Brit lit, etc.

I am willing to help any student at any level of knowledge or skill. I have an autistic son and understand what it can be like to make it through every day as someone with special needs. I am a firm believer of teaching with encouragement rather than fear. Rewards, positive instruction, and goals that can be accomplished are what make people strive to improve. My experience in education has made me a better person, and I would love to share that passion.

I have studied Music Education at Stephen F Austin State University on the saxophone under Dr. Nathan Nabb. I've had ten years of experience in music and professional training on the saxophone. I've performed on the trumpet and taken methods classes for French horn. I have a passions for music that I can talk about for hours, and teach, to anyone.

My son has a diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder, more widely known as Aspergers. I have a lot of experience on how to directly reach children dealing with these things and am not phased by any disability a child may have. I think those struggling with disabilities are beautiful and different and their minds are extraordinary. I'm interested in finding the best ways to bridge the gap of communication to help those with special needs excel.

I am young, passionate, and relatable for any student at any level. I'm excited for new opportunities and helping others excel is a huge part of my life. My goal is to always find where students are at and understand what they need to reach their goals. Let me be the teacher to bring you to the next level you thought you couldn't reach!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have been a musician for ten years and have gained a lot of knowledge from my experience. I know basic theory, instrumentation, and music history. I can help students understand what music is, how it works, and the instruments that make it happen. I studied music education at Stephen F Austin State University and play the saxophone at an advanced level and trumpet and French horn at an intermediate level.

Music History

In my time studying music education a part of my requirements was music history. My knowledge covers an array of different periods such as classical, baroque, modern, etc. I can help students memorize composers, time eras, and understand different styles of music.

Saxophone

I have played the saxophone for ten years and gotten professional training as a performer. I studied under Dr. Nathan Nabb at Stephen F Austin State University for saxophone and music education. I have been lead player for many ensembles and taught peers one on one during the past few years.

Trumpet

I have played trumpet on and off for 3-4 years, when I could get access to one. I've performed in jazz bands and taken methods classes on this instrument while working on my music degree. I think the methods of trumpet are very transferable to saxophone and enjoy playing the trumpet as well as teaching it.
