Hello! My name is Jessie, and I recently moved to the Denver area after completing a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship in South Africa this past year. I am passionate about recognizing the individual strengths of each student I work with, and helping them to not only improve academically, but also personally with their confidence skills inside and outside of the classroom.
As a Fulbright Teaching Fellow, I taught English to over 250 grade 9 students in South Africa. Most of my lessons focused on reading comprehension, grammar, summarizing, and essay writing. In this role, I also worked with a select group of struggling students from each class to provide them with more support and engagement opportunities. Before this fellowship, I worked as an Academic Enrichment Counselor at a high school in Chicago, where I developed after-school enrichment programming such as student government, debate, and mentoring. During my college years, I tutored ESL students and middle school students in reading, and also worked as a Writing Consultant in my university's writing center. My passion in teaching and tutoring is founded in my desire to help students more creatively and effectively express themselves through writing.
When I taught grade 9 English in South Africa for one year, I also led an after-school English Club program to encourage students to practice their English language skills in fun and interesting ways. As a tutor, I have also tutored students in the ACT for more than two years, in groups or one-on-one. As a College Writing Consultant, I have worked with countless students on their writing for pieces ranging from freshman college essays to graduate-level thesis.
I can't wait to work with you! Please contact me to set up a time to tutor. I am available weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings, as well as weekend mornings and afternoons. Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
