About Tiffany

I am a certified and qualified Colorado Early Childhood (EC) Educator. I have an Associate of General Studies with an Emphasis in Early Childhood Education with an EC Group Leader Certificate and an EC Director Certificate that were obtained in 2008. I also have over 4200 hours of teaching experience and altogether about 23 years of tutoring experience. In my academic career, I won multiple awards in math, science, spelling and creative writing competitions. I was on the honor roll and the Dean's List. I was also a National Junior Honor Society inductee, a National Merit Semi-Finalist and a Johns Hopkins University Talent Scholar (meaning I took the SAT in the seventh grade and scored very high). I reside in the Denver Metro area with my husband (a fourth generation Colorado native) of almost 8 years and our three children - Andy (6), Rosie (4) and AJ (3).

I have an insatiable passion for discovery-oriented learning and love to help others experience the same. I believe in making learning fun so my sessions are engaging and interactive. This makes it feel more like light-hearted play than grueling work, even for my older students. I also help my students find, aim for, and achieve a level of excellence that, I believe, is innate in everyone.

I am a well-rounded tutor who can assist students in the liberal arts subjects as well as in math and science. I tutor in standardized test preparation as well. I welcome challenged, or exceptional, learners. I look forward to serving you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have studied Algebra for a number of years. I am also the recipient of multiple math field day competition awards. I also took the SAT (the math portion covers Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry) and scored very high earning me the distinction of being a Johns Hopkins University Talent Scholar.

American History

I have an Associates Degree; and, as a liberal arts major in college, I took several classes in U.S. as well as Native American History. As a tutor in American History, I like to look at it as helping my students understand the American meta-narrative, meaning America's big story. As with any story, there are always two sides and, when tutoring this subject, I like to take the holistic approach and explore both. I look forward to working with you!

Biology

In high school, I was always an above grade level student excelling particularly in the life sciences such as biology, anatomy and physiology, health and nutrition and genetics. I was also a Johns Hopkins University Talent Scholar; and, In the early years of my college career, I was a pre-med student.

Braille

I am blind. I am a graduate of the Colorado Center for the Blind (CCB) independence training program where I learned Grade 1 uncontracted Braille, Grade 2 Contracted braille and computer Braille. In the 11 years since my graduation from CCB, I have used Grade 1 and Grade 2 Braille for reading, writing, labeling, note taking, etc.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a certified Colorado educator, I have close to 4000 hours of field experience. My formal training covers teaching children up to third grade; however, I have taken additional courses in literacy and education that allow me the ability to adapt to tutoring children in the late elementary years and beyond. I also have education and experience to tutor and support challenged learners of all ages with measurable success.

Elementary Science

I won multiple science fair awards at local, regional and state competitions including multiple awards from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for achieving excellence in the sciences. I was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, an honor roll student for seven consecutive years, a National Merit Semi-Finalist and a Johns Hopkins University Talent Scholar.

English

I am a Colorado educator with over 4200 hours of teaching experience. In addition, I have four years of experience as a tutor. I majored in English when I was in college and have received multiple awards in creative writing competitions including national contests hosted by such organizations as the Daughters of the American Revolution.

GED

I took the test myself years ago and did very well, and I now hold teaching credentials from the state of Colorado. I have also taught GED test prep classes back in Houston Texas where I helped several students get their GED. I also helped a lady here in Littleton start her journey to getting her GED.

General Computer

Before becoming a certified Colorado educator, I spent almost two decades in the information technology industry working my way up from doing cable plant installation to desktop support to network administration and project management. I have also been a computer instructor for individuals as well as small businesses. My students have also included challenged learners.

Grammar

In addition to my certification and experience as an Early Childhood educator, I am an award-winning amateur writer and playwright. I have consistently scored high in the verbal sections of such standardized tests as the SAT and the PSAT. A testament to this fact is my designation as a National Merit Semi-finalist and a Johns Hopkins University Talent Scholar.

Handwriting

I am an Early Childhood educator in Colorado. My formal teaching credentials cover children ages birth to third grade, and our training is heavily concentrated in all aspects of literacy including handwriting. I have specific experience with Handwriting Without Tears, the handwriting curriculum used in many schools and early learning centers in the Denver Metro area.

Literature

As an English Major at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, I have studied American and British Literature including in-depth critical analyses of Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Homer, and other major authors. I have also taken multi-cultural classes in Native American Studies and Chicano Studies exploring the literature springing from both ethnic groups which has further expanded and sharpened my literary knowledge base and aptitude. This broad knowledge base also makes me more versatile as a tutor.

Microsoft Excel

I am a technology consultant with close to two decades of experience. A large portion of that time was spent being a Microsoft networking and application professional. I have used Excel in a variety of business, academic and personal settings to accomplish a wide range of tasks such as budgeting, price comparisons, business project metrics, data analysis, sales tracking, customer relationship management, etc. I also have experience with Excel macros.

Microsoft Word

I have been using and supporting Microsoft Word for over 20 years in my role as an IT professional having a broad knowledge base and wide platform of experience in the areas of software application installation/support, hardware installation/support, networking, telephony as well as business and technical communications. I have used Microsoft Word not only as a business professional but also as a student at the university level so I would be familiar with MS Word functions that would prove to be very useful to students.

Psychology

I have a good command of and have had formal instruction in concepts surrounding general psychology, critical thinking as well as child/human development. I am also versed in the writing process and am familiar with APA format guidelines.

QuickBooks

Having an IT career that spanned nearly two decades, I have a broad knowledge base and wide array of professional experience in the area of application support, hardware/software installation/support, data networking and telephony. I have also owned small businesses where I have used Quickbooks effectively as my main accounting platform and have trained other business owners to do the same.

Reading

As a Colorado early educator, I have specific training in learning through literacy, meaning I can center a whole developmentally appropriate curriculum with lessons in reading.

SAT Writing

I took the SAT in the seventh grade and scored high enough to become a Johns Hopkins University Talent Scholar. I took it again in the eleventh grade for the purpose of college entrance. Both times I scored high on the verbal section, and I majored in English at Metro. I am also an award winning amateur playwright and short story writer.

Spanish

I have an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education plus two professional certificates plus over 2800 hours of experience teaching young children. I also minored in Spanish and received a high score on WyzAnt's qualifying test for Spanish tutors.

Spelling

I have an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education as well as over 3000 hours of field experience as an educator in Colorado. I am also a multiple spelling bee award winner, and I achieved a high score on Wyzant's qualifying test for Spelling tutors.

Writing

Writing has been a hobby of mine that I have enjoyed for many years. I have written poems, short stories, expository essays, research papers and narratives. I am an award-winning amateur playwright having had my scripts receive international honors in writing competitions. I wrote my first play at the age of 9; and, it was performed at the local community children's theater in the town I lived in at the time. I majored in English at Metropolitan State University of Denver where I was within a year of graduation when I stopped going to school to raise my three children.
