I am passionate certified social studies teacher with experience teaching both middle and high school students. I have taught ELA, Social Studies, Test Prep and have enjoyed working with students with a variety of learning needs including specific learning disabilities. I enjoy the one-on-one relationship I am able to build with students through tutoring that is not always available in a large class setting. This allows me to better understand how to relate best to you and explain concepts using examples that YOU will understand and relate to. In life outside of teaching I enjoy the outdoors, hiking, swimming, and playing with my 4-month-old puppy.
I have taught Common Core ELA in NYC Dept. of Ed. for two years including whole class, small-group and one-on-one specific reading and writing instruction as well as standardized test prep. I have experience teaching specific common core test prep instruction for reading and writing. I have also graded common core tests and understand the rubric and grading.
I am social studies certified with experience teaching middle and high school levels including american history, criminal justice, legal studies, as well as undergraduate background in comparative religious studies and global history.
I am enthusiastic and enjoy explaining material in ways that are relevant to students' lives. I am available for emergency tutoring sessions (need last minute help cramming for a test or essay?) or long-term learning goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
