About Heather

My name is Heather and books and people are my two favorite things in the world. I love to learn and teach through reading and I love to meet new people. These two passions make me a very dedicated and fun tutor. Last year I worked as a full-time volunteer at Urban Peak, a youth homeless shelter where I taught everything from GED to college prep to job searching. It was there that I learned how much I want to teach and help young people feel the confidence they need to succeed in school. My favorite things to teach are: English, grammar and reading comprehension, and History, especially Early America and the Civil Rights Movement.

My tutoring style is going to be whatever my student needs to thrive. Do we need to draw pictures or look up websites or take a break every ten minutes? Fine with me. You know how you learn best, I'm just here to help. A little more about me: my favorite book is Jane Eyre, I love to hike and simply be in the mountains, I've always sung in a choir of some sort, and I love tacos.

As a student I myself struggled with math and so that puts me in a unique position to understand where students are coming from. When I was tutoring I heard a lot of, "I suck at math" and "I just can't do math." Math isn't some indecipherable code and anyone can do it if they are willing to practice. I am more than happy to slow it down in terms of the steps to algebra and we can work together until we both, "get it."

Nothing gets me more excited than talking about English and I think enthusiasm is contagious. I promise I will get you excited about commas, plots, euphemisms and similes. I studied literature and writing in college and would love a chance to share some of what I've gained through tutoring.

I'd love for you to contact me and let me know what kind of help I can offer. Please let me know when and where works for you and I'll be there.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
