University of Northern Colorado (Master's)
I am a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, where I earned both my BA and MA in English. While I was working on my MA, I also worked as a teaching assistant and a tutor. I have experience teaching and tutoring middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, and I am comfortable and confident working with students from all different backgrounds, whether their first language is English or they are just learning the language.
My favorite thing about tutoring English is showing students that English is not as difficult a subject as they may think, and that, though they may not know specific "rules," they can easily understand (and in most cases already do) the basic principles of the language. Working one-on-one with students is also one of my favorite aspects of tutoring because it allows me and my students to get a better understanding of one another and how we learn and teach, which allows for a more meaningful, more constructive tutoring session.
For as long as I can remember I have been an avid reader, and I carry that passion with me today. One of my primary areas of interest is Victorian literature--Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy. I love them all, but I also read much older and much more contemporary fiction and nonfiction, which gives me the ability to effectively talk about and understand many types of literature. In my spare time, I write fiction, and I try to write every day. This constant contact with the page has helped me hone my skills as a writer, and has also helped me better understand the writing process so that I can communicate more effectively with students about the ins and outs of creating well-written, concise pieces of writing. One of the last things I would like to talk about is the more mechanical side of writing. I consider grammar to be one of my strong suits, and I am also familiar with various format styles--MLA, APA, Chicago Manual. In all, I feel that I am a well-rounded tutor with the ability to help in nearly every area of writing.
If you are struggling with any issues in English (or if you would like to get ahead), please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have spent the last seven years as either a student or teacher of English. I have both a BA and an MA in English, and I am an avid writer and reader.
I studied under a professor at UNC who graded essays based on grammar and punctuation. If a student had a comma splice in his or her essay, that student would earn no higher than a C. If the student used a sentence fragment without labeling it, that student would receive no higher than a D. I earned an A on all my essays.
I have been a reader of Literature for as long as I can remember. As soon as I finish a book, I start a new one. I have read books by Orwell, Dickens, Wilde, Dumas, Bronte, Rowling, and many others. With this background (and with my experience at the college level), I have the tools necessary to skillfully tutor in many genres.
Having gone to school for English, my ability to comprehend while Reading complex texts has grown significantly over the years. This skill has also enabled me to help others comprehend complex texts by breaking those texts into manageable parts.
I consider myself a writer more than anything else. I write nearly every day. When I am not writing, I am reading because I believe that one cannot be a good writer without also being a good reader. My dedication to writing allows me to help others understand how to write well and how to write concisely.
