A mother of two kids under age 16, I have hands-on experience with children and love kids. I'm a former Colorado Teach for America Corps member, chosen from among 40,000 applicants in 2014. Through this experience, I gained my CDE certification in English Language Arts (6-12) and classroom experience teaching middle schoolers pre-Algebra and ELA. I hold my MBA from Columbia University and my BA in Communications from Indiana U. (I am a big-time hoops fan.)
Because I have been writing professionally for more than 20 years in the nonprofit community as a fundraiser and executive director of a small women's organization serving single Moms, I have gained excellent experience in patiently coaching and teaching writing and editing skills. I also love literature and am familiar with good authors for young people to recommend. I am a very cheerful person, trustworthy and will be sure to make your tutoring experience fun, as well as productive. I believe making learning fun and connecting with students on what interests them, in order to relate it to the subject, from math to reading, are essential. Tons of positive reinforcement here!
A Columbia University MBA, I have been writing professionally in the nonprofit sector for more than 20 years, most recently as the Executive Director of a small women's empowerment nonprofit, where I was responsible for social media, marketing, and grant proposals and reports. I am a former 2014 Colorado Teach for America Corps member, through which I gained direct classroom experience teaching 7th graders pre-Algebra and English Language Arts. I held a Colorado Dept. of Education alternative teaching license in secondary English Language Arts from 2014-15.
As a former 2014 Teach for America Colorado Corps member, I am fluent in the Common Core standards and familiar with many resources to help tutor students in all subjects. I took the English Language Arts Secondary Praxis exam in summer 2014 and passed with high scoring. In doing this, I learned many of the best practices to know when one is planning on taking a Praxis exam.
As a mother of two kids under the age of 16, I am trustworthy and very experienced in helping younger children improve their handwriting and spelling skills. Both of my children are "A" students, in part because I've nurtured a love of learning and always having fun learning and making learning relevant to the kids.
Please note: All sessions must be a minimum of 2 hours each. I appreciate the understanding of my students in this matter.
I am available weekday evenings until 7 pm and Sundays, and I am happy to start immediately, accepting students in Lowry, southeast Denver, Aurora, Centennial, Highlands Ranch and Englewood at this time. Laura made me feel confident and at ease. She gave me tools right away, and I'm excited to work more with her!
Laura helped me so much while I was studying for the praxis! She was patient and kind when helping me and she even made the lessons fun. I was nervous when I started but Laura made me feel so comfortable after the first time meeting her. Laura is so knowledgeable on many subjects, I would definitely recommend her to anyone studying for the praxis or any other test.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I'm an experienced professional grant writer and former 7th grade English teacher. I passed the Praxis secondary English teaching exam in 2014.
As a 2014 Teach for America Corps member, I took both the secondary math and English Language Arts exams. I successfully passed the Praxis English Language Arts exam and gained in-depth knowledge of best practices in taking the Praxis that I would be happy to share with individuals preparing to take their Praxis exams.
Reading comprehension starts with a love of books. The best way to engage a child is to look for what they want to learn about or if they like stories, what characters and settings appeal to them the most. Connecting what kids are reading to how it can be related to their everyday life is not only fun, it's essential. I love books too so my enthusiasm shines through.
I'm an experienced tutor and former 7th grade English teacher. I love spelling and can make learning fun. Use of Latin prefixes and suffixes can also be a good tool to use to improve spelling.
