Although not a certified teacher, I have 6 years of experience tutoring mathematics/physics and 2 years of experience in testing and curriculum development while employed as the lead instructor and manager of a tutoring center (which also involved tutoring students struggling with test anxiety, ADD and ADHD).
I am very familiar with the structure of different mathematics textbooks, testing methods, problem types and solutions at the middle school, high school, and college level.
My teaching method is a "systematic" approach to various types of problems -- this allows students to spend less time memorizing and more time recognizing patterns and developing an "instinct" on how to do a problem. I'm also a fan of using number sense activities and "going back to basics" to break down tough concepts into easier parts.
What in my mind sets me miles above other tutors is my ability to encourage students, understand the pressure many students feel to perform well, and help them feel at ease during a tutoring session. I also provide useful study sheets for tests/exams that summarize each major concept in clear and concise notes (tailed to each student) to help each student study more efficiently -- a free bonus! My goal is to help students discover that learning those tough math concepts can be interesting and feel achievable! My son said Alana just eliminated a lot of work for him in math by teaching him a new way of conceptualizing the math problem presented.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
