About Steven

My name is Steve. I am a former teacher for children in grades 1-8 in both regular education and in special education for children with mild to moderate children that take the majority of their classes with regular education students. I taught in the public schools for 9 years, as a way to give back to my home community after a long career in law and business. I have my Professional Educator Special Education-Cross Categorical license for Grades 1-8 from Wisconsin, but now, my wife and I have relocated to Denver to be near my three adult children.

My experience is nine years with primary, intermediate, and middle school grade children, teaching Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Middle School Science and Social Studies. My main traits are that I am patient, but set high expectations and never give up on a student. Children who receive Special Services and have an IEP at their school are highly welcomed. I am equally comfortable with the Common Core State Standards used in CO.

I have ten years' online college teaching instruction and am an undergraduate faculty member for an online university teaching law related courses in criminal justice, I earned the Advanced Certified Facilitator designation for the university and have also taught Environmental Science.

Technology is a great way to encourage students to learn and improve their success. I like to use online tools during lessons and as assigned practice work.

The picture is with my wife. I prefer to meet my students during the day or early evenings, Monday through Saturday either at the student's home (where an adult is present) or at a neutral public location (library).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a licensed Professional Educator by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as teacher for Cross Categorical Special Education for grades 1-8. I have taught writing, reading, math, and behavioral skills to students with ADD and ADHD disabilities which have comprised more than 50% of my special education students. My students are getting my help with small group instruction or by direct inclusion in the regular classroom, where I co-teach the same subjects to all students. I incorporate instruction that engages the senses of learners with memory, distraction and impulsive behavior problems. Over 75% of my students saw gains under their Individual Education Plans that exceeded one and one-half years, with fewer incident referrals for behavior. I worked with grades 1 through 5 for 4 years and grades 6 through 8 during the past three years in an elementary school setting. I have worked with my middle school students in a full inclusion setting in the regular classroom, so they can comprehend the lessons and successfully prepare for High School. I am licensed for all mild and moderate disabilities. I received a Master of Arts in Teaching in 2009 from Rockford University and a certification as a Special Education Cross Categorical Teacher. I have worked for the children at the Milwaukee Public Schools for the past 7 years, and am very experienced at providing culturally responsive education.

Criminal Justice

I have been a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin since graduating with a JD from the University of Wisconsin. I have experience working in the criminal courts, juvenile courts, and in handling Drunk driving experience with substantial trial and court experience. I have taught for the University of Phoenix School of Criminal Justice and Security online as a Certified Advanced Facilitator for over 40 class sections since 2007. I have taught courses about the criminal courts, criminal procedure, the juvenile process, criminology and law enforcement. I also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching MAT from Rockford University in 2009. I am very comfortable helping students succeed on their tests and papers by giving substantive feedback.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed Professional Educator by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a special education teacher for grades 1-8. I have worked and co-taught in the regular classrooms for grades 1-8 for the past 3 years. I teach reading, writing, math, science and social studies to both special and regular education students in grades 1-8. I have a Masters in Education MAT 2009 from Rockford University. I have worked for the Milwaukee Public Schools for the past 8 years and have high expectations for all of my students.

Elementary Math

My math qualifications are in elementary math and pre-algebra.

My main instructional approach in math is using real world problems to engage the student. The student is taught how to read a problem and identify what steps are needed to find a solution.

Praxis

When I began my teaching experience I sat for two Praxis exams in 2007 to qualify to commence my Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) studies and to teach for Milwaukee Public Schools. I passed the Praxis 1 exam in Reading, Mathematics and Writing with a 95% average and passed the Praxis II Middle School Content test with a 184, well above the 146 passing score in Mathematics, Science, Reading and Social Studies.
I completed a Praxis II preparation test with a small group lasting 6 weeks at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both exams were necessary to be considered "a highly qualified teacher" under the federal and state laws.

Reading

My experience as an educator has been primarily with struggling readers. After teaching the middle grades for three years, I am back with grades 1-3 working in and outside the classroom, teaching students how to make the proper sounds with letters and blends to form the skills for decoding. Comprehension is developed with building understanding of words and their context. It begins with a single sentence and develops with a paragraph, a page, a chapter, a story or factual text. Reading fluency and vocabulary development are the latter phases for readers to accelerate their comprehension.
