Pomona College (Claremont CA) (Mathematics)
Hey there. My name is Alf, and I'm a math tutor. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics at Pomona College in the 1990s, but then turned my attention to non-mathematical pursuits. In the years since then, I have done tutoring in math off and on. I've done the most tutoring with adult GED students in math, science, and other subjects; this would probably be my best fit. However, I'm also comfortable working with high school students in math classes up until around the Calculus I range.
With each student I've worked with, my goal has been the same: to work myself out of a job. It's my goal to get a student through their current and specific difficulties. Also, I recognize that things won't necessarily be "smooth sailing" simply because a student has gotten beyond the current sticking spot. So I attempt to help a student search for and identify potential problem spots, and find ways to get around any obstacles that might arise later on. Hey there. My name is Alf, and I'm a math tutor. I was struggling with the math course that I was in and needed some last minute help before my final. Alf took the time to break down the equations so that I understood the process and felt more confident and prepared for the exam. Thanks Alf!
As my student prepares to take the toughest part (for her) of the GED, math, Alf remains a constant that she can rely on. She continues to rave about his patience and aptitude for teaching her in a way that makes sense to her and has math be a little less frightening and intimidating. She has come a long way, literally, from knowledge equivalency of a 6th grader to now nearly a high school graduate level student in a matter of months. We both agree - Alf rocks!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
