University of Denver (PhD)
I recently graduated with my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. I did very well in math classes throughout high school and college, as well as on the math sections of the SAT, SAT II and GRE exams. I feel confident in my ability to tutor all areas of math in high school below Calculus, including Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Statistics, as well as helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, and GRE exams. I grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and have been tutoring since high school. I began my education at University of Pennsylvania in the engineering school before ultimately deciding that I wanted to pursue a career in Psychology. Now, tutoring math provides a perfect outlet to both engage with adolescents and young adults in a meaningful way while continuing to have an outlet for math and science in my life. Math has always been a favorite subject of mine as it has always made sense to me. I enjoy solving problems and the vast array of opportunities to apply the principles of math to real-life situations. I love sharing my knowledge and passion for math with students, as well as assisting them in learning how to work through challenging problems. Teaching math is fun because there is almost always a rule or logical explanation that can help students figure out where they are getting stuck and how to move forward. I have a fairly laid back personality, and I work with students at a pace that works for them, constantly assessing their strengths and growth areas, and what they are needing most as we work through problems, whether it is for a class or in preparation for a standardized test. I also taught English for one year in Chile, which was an unbelievable growing experience, both personally and professionally. I am fortunate to now call Denver home, as I love the outdoors and everything the mountains have to offer from skiing and snowboarding to mountain biking and white water rafting. In addition to math subjects, I can also tutor in Chemistry, Psychology, and first and second year Spanish. I also have extensive experience helping students prepare for standardized tests including the SAT, ACT, GRE and GMAT exams. My psychology background allows me to develop rapport quickly with students and support them in the most helpful ways, balancing the need to answer their questions with allowing them sufficient time to find the answers and learn the methods on their own. I look forward to working with you and making sure that math or other subjects do not stand in the way of conquering the next chapter of your life! We were very pleased with David. He picked up on the weak areas and works hard to make sure the lessons address the problems he sees. He makes sure we receive a summary of each lesson and the progress that has been made. My son was really connected with David. As the result of David's tutoring our son received an excellent grade in honors geometry. We couldn't be happier about the whole experience and highly recommend David!
David has been a great tutor, my son got a Mastery on his last test, he was earning D's and really struggling to understand geometry but is doing much better now.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was fortunate to have English teachers in high school teach me the rules of grammar year after year with plenty of repetition. I now have a solid foundation from which to tutor students preparing for the ACT exam. I performed well on my own standardized tests - SAT and GRE - and I also taught English for one year in Chile. I am confident in my ability to help students find their mistakes and learn the rules necessary to succeed on this exam!
I did very well on the math sections of the SAT and GRE exams, nearly perfect. I am very confident in my knowledge and ability to tutor students preparing for standardized tests, particularly the math sections.
I also have a solid foundation in the science and English subjects of these exams, and can help students hone their skills and work on the specific areas they need to improve their scores.
Science and math have always been natural strengths of mine. I have a lot of experience helping students prepare for standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT and GRE. The science portion of the ACT requires patience, practice, and scientific reasoning, and I can help students learn the concepts necessary to succeed on this portion of the exam.
I just graduated with my Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) from the University of Denver. I have a lot of experience working with college students with ADHD during my time as a therapist at CU Boulder Counseling and Psychological Services, and the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center. I helped students design behavioral plans, organize tasks and their schedules, and practice mindfulness and other techniques to stay focused on one thing at a time. I also emphasize the importance of maintaining a regular schedule, regular diet, exercise, sleep, and having fun things in the student's life beyond purely academic activities. Being patient with students and helping them to maintain structure are critical components of working with students with ADHD.
I have always excelled at math, particularly with Algebra. I can help students set up equations, especially when stuck on confusing word problems. Practicing the principles of Algebra time and again, including factoring, FOIL'ing and setting up equations will get your student on the right track to succeed.
I did quite well in math subjects throughout middle and high school, particularly in Algebra and Honors Geometry. I know the formulas and rules very well, and can help students draw out pictures, write out equations, and conceptualize problems with real world examples and demonstrations to aid in their learning. I have stayed current with my knowledge and practice of Geometry as it is an integral part of the SAT, GRE, and GMAT exams that are exams for which I also tutor students preparing.
I have tutored students preparing for the GMAT exam for several years. My strength is in helping students improve their score on the Quantitative Section. The key here is knowing your math concepts well - such as algebra, geometry, and arithmetic, and then practicing the tricky GMAT style questions repeatedly so you are familiar with the test. I can help students master concepts and go over practice problems until they feel comfortable with the exam.
I have several years of experience tutoring math. I do well tutoring Prealgebra, as I always ensure that my students understand the core concepts before moving on. I help students take time, understand the problem, set it up, and solve, and can provide explanations of rules and methods as needed to help students who are struggling.
If you're struggling with the probability questions on the SAT, ACT, or GRE, I can help you learn the concepts necessary to succeed! I have a lot of experience helping students prepare for these stressful exams, and students can usually answer these questions correctly if they can see how to set up the problem. I enjoy tutoring all levels of math, so if you are in a math class focusing on probability, I can help you out with that too!
I recently graduated with my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. I also majored in Psychology in my undergraduate years at the University of Pennsylvania. I have several years of clinical and research experience, and have read numerous articles and books on various topics in Psychology throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers. I would now like the opportunity to give back to the community and help teach students about this fun subject, and help them with their struggles.
I have worked for SAT test preparation companies in the past, and have a wealth of knowledge and materials to help students who are preparing for this stressful exam. I earned a 780 out of 800 on the math section when I took the exam in high school, and a perfect 800 on the GRE math section, so I know what it takes to study, prepare, and focus for these exams. I help students assess their strengths and growth areas, and figure out what types of questions and which concepts to review most to help students improve their scores.
I did very well in my college and graduate school statistics classes. I am comfortable with a lot of the principles and calculations in statistics, but less comfortable with tutoring students in SPSS or other software programs. Depending on what level stats you are taking, I think I could be a great fit, given my extensive tutoring background of high school courses and SAT/ACT/GRE test preparation.
