About Kimberly

Hi my name is Kimberly. I have recently moved back to Colorado after experiencing life in the southern states for the last five years. I lived in Austin for two years, and while there, worked as a private home school teacher and tutor specializing in students who struggle in a conventional classroom setting. My expertise includes helping students with ADHD as well as autism spectrum disorders, not only succeed with specific subjects, but also increase confidence and encourage strategies for organization and social success.

My professional experience also includes six years as an elementary school counselor during which I taught classroom lessons to children grades K-6. In addition, I have had the opportunity to work as a reading tutor at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, a leading company in the field of reading and spelling success. During their training and summer program, I gained the experience to help any student, including those with dyslexia, increase phonemic awareness, decoding and comprehension.

I am also the mother of a 10th grader so not only am I experienced with helping students in a school setting, I also have personal experience tutoring my son who I continue to support teaching organization and study skills.

My approach to learning is that every student has the ability to be successful if provided with the right tools, strategies and support. I look forward to helping your student gain confidence and success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I was employed as a Elementary School Counselor for 5 years and have a current Utah License and a pending Texas School Counselor license. As a school counselor I conducted small counseling groups for children with ADHD and taught organizational skills one on one as well as in classroom lessons. I led a school wide team to help students who were struggling in the regular classroom setting with attention issues to not only help them learn strategies to succeed but also work with teachers to modify their lessons to accommodate students as appropriate.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a licensed School Counselor who has worked extensively with children with Aspergers and Autism Spectrum Disorders. I have also worked as an ABA Therapist for two years conducting discrete trials and therapy in home and in small settings with students ranging from non-verbal to mainstreamed. I have created lesson plans, behavior plans, reinforcement/rewards schedules and worked closely with parents and teachers as well as students struggling with behaviors impeding their learning and success.

Phonics

I have been trained by the private company Lindamood-Bell which has done extensive research on phonics and reading and is viewed as a leading resource in the field. After the 80 hour training, I then worked as a full time Reading Tutor specializing in Phonics and the visualization of reading techniques. The method I use for teaching phonics includes not only teaching the rules and sounds but also teaching children to visualize the sounds and letters as they are learning to help future decoding and blending.
