About Kaitlyn

Hello!

My name is Kaitlyn. I currently serve with City Year Denver as a full-time volunteer tutor and mentor in Denver Public Schools. I have a bachelor's degree in English and creative writing from the College of Charleston, where I graduated with a 3.95 GPA. I have varied experiences tutoring students of all ages in writing, English, and math.

In my current position, I work with middle school students in all content areas, with an emphasis on seventh grade pre-algebra students. I tutor students individually, as part of a small group, and in full classroom settings. Of the students I tutor twice a week, over 75% have improved their math scores over one grade level.

Additionally, I spent three years working as a writing lab consultant at the College of Charleston. There, I earned advanced certification from the College Reading & Learning Association as a writing tutor. I worked with undergraduate and graduate students from all majors to improve not only the paper at hand, but their overall writing skills. I am well versed in the fundamentals of grammar, organization, and content development in any type of writing assignment. I am familiar with APA, MLA, and Chicago citation styles.

I also spent two years tutoring fourth graders who were at least one reading level behind. After receiving tutoring for one hour a week for six months, each of my students improved their reading level over one grade level, bringing them back on track with their grade.

As a tutor, I pride myself most on my ability to take complex tasks and simplify them for any level of learner. I value concrete tasks, specific feedback, and data-driven results. I believe strongly that every child is capable of learning, and as an educator, it is my job to help students unlock their own potential.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
