Having recently completed my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Creative Writing at the University of Colorado-Denver, I know first hand the importance of strong reading and writing skills. I can help any elementary student gain and strengthen their skills whether it be in reading, comprehension, grammar, spelling and/ or writing. And while I specialize in language arts, I am able to help students also strengthen their math and science. After all, strong reading skills can translate into strong math and science skills. I can also assist students in becoming more organized while creating good study habits . As a tutor I am certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. In August 2015 I will begin student teaching in the Denver Public School District. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with helping children learn to read both as a homeschooling mother and as an educational assistant in the reading resource room at an elementary school in Eugene, Oregon. Working in groups of 2 - 6, I facilitated phonics lessons for students in K - 5th grade. I have successfully completed a course entitled: Foundations of Education and Language Strategies. This course provided me with additional skills needed when working with students as they learn to read.
My expertise in reading comes from my own passion for reading, teaching my own two children to read before they entered school and college courses such as Foundations of Education and Language Arts Strategies, Introduction to Phonetics, and numerous literature and writing classes.
As a non-traditional student myself, I had to learn how to balance all facets of my life; school, parenting, marriage, and work. I discovered the benefits of knowing about learning styles and types of learning. I also learned a lot about procrastination and how to avoid the traps like, "I have to clean my desk first..." I can help students discover their own learning style, homework and study pitfalls, and customize a homework/study schedule that will work for them.
