Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6 elementary teacher. I also have a Master's degree in Special Education. These credentials offer me the opportunity to use specific individualized instruction and assessment. I believe in educating the whole child by creating meaningful connections to the real world. This is done by connecting new knowledge to existing knowledge. Overall, I believe a child's elementary education is the most important learning a child will have in their lifetime. It is the foundation for which all learning is laid. I look forward to meeting your student to see if we have an academic fit. Nancy

This is a favorite of mine! Phonics are the foundation for language. I am a licensed Special Education teacher trained and certified in Wilson, Fundations and Lexia. These phonics programs are used routinely in the classroom for building your student's foundation for language. I will determine the method once I meet your student and we can determine a plan that uses your student's strengths to lift up areas of need. I look forward to talking with you. Call me if you want to talk some more. Nancy

Study Skills,

Study Skills

Carefully developed study skills is how I managed to get a BA in Psychology and two Master's Degrees. Study skills are at the foundation of success in in high school and then your post secondary education. The big three things you need to know are: Always go to class, take impeccable notes and be able to organize your assignments and timelines. Those three things will allow you to organize your thoughts, notes and objectives into a well written paper or assignment. Specifically, I can teach you how to organize your thoughts through strategic note taking such as the Cornell Method and Mind Maps and/or Spider diagrams. In addition to note taking, time management and test taking strategies are all critical in developing good study skills. It may sound simple, but good study skills have to be practiced and developed into a personal routine that results in academic success.

I am a special education teacher who specializes in language arts. I am able to teach almost any student to read or read better than the level they are at. With reading comes writing and reading comprehension. I believe that each student is an individual with individual learning styles and needs. The reason I have been so successful is I strive to keep their learning relevant, interesting, and fun. The other reason for my success I can only thank the countless parents who have helped their student learn through living life. In other words, make every moment counts when it comes to well rounded education.

Writing,

Writing

Reading and Writing are skills that develop and dovetail simultaneously to produce good language acquisition skills. Once you learn the basic writing skills the next step is to practice. Having been through graduate school twice with two Master's as well as a license in Special Education, I have had my fair share of practice when it comes to writing. The key is to learn to write something you care about. When teaching others to write I will purposefully select a topic of interest to a student. From there we learn how to take a topic that is not of interest and find some aspect that is in some way compelling. The most important thing is to make sure a student can find success when they make the attempts. This is where one on one learning can really make a difference. Writing is difficult for some students to learn. Much of the problem is self confidence. This is something that can be worked through with instruction, success and strong support from home.

Amazing

My son adores her and she is able to get a lot out of him. She's creative and flexible. She adjusts what she does to help my son get what he needs on any given day. She watches his cues and makes changes as necessary. My son is making great reading growth now and instead of being extremely behind, is just a little behind now.

Fun and Effective

Initially my son was nervous about meeting with a tutor but after spending less than 5 minutes with Nancy my son was giggling and having fun while learning. Nancy is very knowledgeable and is constantly looking for ways to challenge my son without him realizing he is being challenged. Thank you Nancy for helping my son see that learning can be fun.

Knowledgeable and Caring

Nancy was very creative and patient in tutoring our five year old son. He really enjoyed his lessons and always looks forward to more educational games, he plays a variety of games that help him learn and stay focused. We're very happy with Nancy!

Patient and engaging.

Nancy did a great job working with my daughter on Orton Gillingham starter principles. This first session was establishing baselines and building interest and excitement for her.

Highly recommended!

My son was diagnosed with ADHD years ago, and has struggled through school his entire life. Between testing, homework, and everyday classroom activities, my son's confidence and self-esteem was extremely low. Nancy has been one of the best motivators I have ever seen work with him. She is very quick at bringing a child's strengths out, and has the unique ability to instill the confidence in my son that we have been struggling for years to find. We have tried multiple tutors throughout my son's schooling, and Nancy is by far the best we have found. A great tutor not only teaches a child to learn, but also the unique ability to identify the child's strengths, and find ways to teach the child how to apply them. I would highly recommend Nancy to tutor your child, no matter the extreme. With what she did in a few short months for my son, I am confident she can help any child.

Great Tutor - Creative, Patient and Knowledgeable

Nancy brought some great new tools and ideas to her tutoring sessions with my seven year old son. And she did a great job keeping him engaged and tailoring her sessions to his individual needs.

Super enthusiastic.

Nancy is a fabulous tutor. She grasped very early the best approach for my reluctant reader and never lost patience. Reading used to be a battle with my child, then tutoring with Miss Nancy became the highlight of my child's week. Nancy's enthusiasm is backed by a strong foundation of teaching essentials and a clear love of teaching young minds. Also, she was very accommodating with our busy schedules. A great find!

Fantastic!!!!!

I would like to start off by saying thank you for your help (even though it was for a short time). You have not only helped my son you have built his confidence back up. He really enjoyed meeting with you and he had fun also. It wasn't just a drill lesson in math, it was a fun learning experience. His words not mine. Nancy is truly a wonderful teacher. She really knows what she is doing and how to get an understanding on how to get the right teaching tools to help each individual student that fits their needs. I HIGHLY recommend Nancy to anyone. My opinion the best there is. So again thank you so much.

Highly Recommended!

My son was diagnosed with learning difficulties and at 10 years old was still not able to read. After searching for a couple of months we discovered Nancy! Not only is Ms. C. qualified to teach all subjects but she also is someone who has a knack for communicating teaching concepts in easy-to-learn and novel ways that appeal to a 10 year old boy. She applies many of her concepts to real world scenarios which make the learning experience so much more interesting. We had been seeing other tutors for a longer period of time with no success. She has been tutoring our son for about six weeks and I have seen him blossom! Instead of reading books to my son, he is reading books to me! Nancy is very energetic and delightful and takes a personal interest in her students. She is very flexible with her schedule and actually comes to my house for tutoring lessons. She arrives on time and works until the last minute of her tutoring time. I highly recommend Nancy S. for your next tutor!
