My name is Vicky. I have worked with children and adults in a variety of settings, currently tutoring in a school for K-8. My area of concentration is English - I love literature, stories, writing, words used well - so excitement about reading tends to exude from me quite naturally!
Because I was born and raised in another country (Brazil) and had the wonderful opportunity to learn two languages simultaneously, I was constantly surrounded by friends wanting to learn English. Consequently, I developed an ability to come at the learning process from a variety of perspectives.
I think reading aloud to any age is crucial in developing reading and listening skills, and that the exploration of various styles can be instructive in honing one's skills for any subject matter. My older son (now 24) had an IEP in high school after being diagnosed with ADHD, and my younger brother had several serious learning issues that persist even today. These experiences have heightened my sensitivity for and knowledge of multiple intelligences, and the richness of various learning styles.

Vicky gave my 7 year old daughter and I a crash course in sewing. She was very patient with both my daughter and I and inspired us! Even after several hours my daughter was completely engaged!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working with adults who are interested in improving their writing and reading skills in English as a regular part of their jobs. It has afforded me the opportunity to delve into some of the marvelous complexities of the language and challenge students to refine and expand their skills. A lot of practice goes a long way towards exposure and trouble-shooting, so good exercises and feedback are essential to this process!
Before moving to Colorado 3 years ago, I had a small catering business in Virginia. I had gotten into it due to my love of cooking, and continued working in that area until my move here. I still occasionally take on a gig here or there.
My passion includes a desire to learn about how food affects us, how to accommodate various food allergies or preferences, and how to help others learn to cook and be comfortable in the kitchen. I have taught many people cooking skills over the years, and am in the process of starting a business here with that purpose in mind.
My undergraduate degree is in English, but my training began early on with my parents. My mother was an English teacher with a passion for writing, literature and grammar. My father brought his own exacting communicative skills to his work, and appreciated nothing more than a speaker (formal or informal) who could express him or herself eloquently.
My own love of literature, of good writing, of words, and good grammar have been nurtured over the years as I have pursued my own interests. I must also attribute an increased richness to the fact that I learned both Portuguese and English as a young child and have carried both through to the present.
My English background and fluency in both Portuguese and English, along with work with students learning English as a second language, have helped me to hone skills needed for tutoring successfully in this area.
I worked for 5+ years with the Zacharias-Ganey Health Institute in Richmond, VA. I taught in the weight management program (weights, cardio, nutrition), and also taught water and land aerobics and spinning classes. I eventually moved solely into water fitness, both deep and shallow water.
For 3 years, I worked as an in-house fitness trainer for elderly clients for a company called "Fit-In-Your-Body". I designed an exercise plan based on the client's health issues and fitness level, and met with each one a couple of times a week to execute the workout.
I was born and raised in Brazil, went through the Brazilian public school system through all but one year of high school (which I completed in the USA), and have taught Portuguese to several students over the past few years. I continue to be fluent in the language.
I have worked with several students ages 4, 5, and a bit older over the years, watching them learn how to read and improve their reading skills. It is an exciting time and I am always amazed and honored to be a part of such a venture.
I have been sewing since I was 9, learning at that point from my mother. I continued sewing, both clothes for myself and others as well as window treatments and other home coverings.
A few years ago I moved into creating my own designs. I auditioned for and got into Frockout 2012 in Denver, CO, a fashion event featuring designer-created and made garments. I still design clothes, but started this past year also giving sewing lessons to a 1st and 3rd grader!
I am qualified by WyzAnt to help students prepare for the TOEFL exam, and love working with any age learner in this exciting process.
I feel that growing up bilingual has considerably enriched my ability to communicate through writing. I received a strong background in grammar, and read incessantly in both languages. I have kept journals since I was a child, and pay close attention to how writers express themselves.
As a tutor, recognizing that vocabulary and themes differ from age to age, of course, I emphasize the "tools" of the trade (grammar, vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure, etc.) so that the students can achieve their particular writing goals.
