I was pleased with the first session. My goal is a basic working knowledge to be able to speak and interact with local people on a couple of trips to South America this year. I especially appreciated his pointers on pronunciation and grammatical constructions. It's sometimes difficult not to speak English because of the complexity of the conversations, but this was not as much of a problem as other tutors I've tried. I look forward to more sessions. Bob is patient and I feel less self-conscious about trying my limited ability to speak, and with more sessions, this will improve.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my 30+ years of professional choral singing I have performed music of all periods, and am quite familiar with not only composers and styles, but with how and why music evolved. I have an extensive collection of music with which to illustrate how musical currents developed, from the Medieval period to the present. My extensive historical insight (from my academic background) helps me to impart how social, economic, and political trends shaped music, which gives students a profound perspective into the history of music in Western culture.
I have been a professional musician for the last 32 years, and have taught music as well (in a private school in Virginia). I am quite versed in early music in particular (Med., Ren., Bar.), but have an excellent perspective on music of all periods. I'm able to tie in the evolution of the arts with prevailing currents in other spheres such as economic, political, and social development, so students acquire a useful context for understanding how and why music changes over the centuries.
I have a degree in Asian Studies, which included the histories and doctrines of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Jainism, and other faiths. I have sung professionally in church choirs since 1982, so I am familiar not only with Christian liturgy, but with Christian and Jewish theology as well. I have traveled widely, and observed how religion is integrated into the daily life of people everywhere. For example, when I lived and taught in Turkey, I became very familiar with my Gulenist students' world-view, and how radically it differs from that of Salafists in the Arab world, Shi'ites in Iran, etc.
I have been a professional choral singer and composer since the 1970s. I studied music theory in college, and became a crack sight-reader. (I am often called by choral directors to "parachute" into a gig and pull it off with minimal rehearsal.) I have pedagogical methods for teaching sight-singing, and bring a useful historical perspective into my teaching. I believe that my teaching experience in other areas would be a boon to teaching this subject as well.

Worked in translation at the InterAmerican Development Bank (Wash., D.C.).
Helped a well-known Argentine writer research a book on Peron; helped him translate his speeches into English.
Traveled for seven weeks in Peru, made numerous trips to Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries.
