About James

I received a BA in English Literature with minors in Creative Writing, Philosophy, and Japanese from Ball State University in 1997. In 2005 I returned to school earning a triple major from Indiana University, Indianapolis in International Studies, Philosophy, and Spanish. I continued to the University of Indianapolis. where I earned an MA in International Relations with a focus on international drug policy and the Mexican drug war. I have taken classes in Mexican art history and Mexican cinema in Mexico, and studied race and criminal justice in Washington.

Since 2000, I have run my own communications/public relations company. I have had clients ranging from independent authors working on guides to whole health to doctoral students in a variety of subjects to marketing pieces in major Midwestern newspapers and trade journals. I have worked for state and federal-level government agencies. I recently completed a consulting contract with a policy research center developing a project on African stock exchanges. I am currently the Program and Policy Analyst for the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program at the University of Colorado, a research consultant at writer for High Technocracy, and a fellow at the Sagamore Institute.

It is my philosophy that knowledge is gained through finding connections between academic work and real life. Success in school is less about the facts that are learned than it is about joining those facts in creative ways and communicating those ideas effectively in writing and orally. That's why my approach to tutoring is individually designed around the student's present circumstances and their goals. I will work with the student to develop good learning habits that work across subjects and will dramatically improve their ability to apply knowledge gained in one arena to other fields.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

As Communications Manager of the Indiana Humanities Council I used Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to create flyers, brochures, event programs, marketing one-sheets, and promotional bookmarks. As Program Manager at the Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly I used these two programs to create between 3-5 In-House ads for the magazine every quarter. I have more recently used these programs to develop marketing and training materials for the Sagamore Institute.

I can quickly and easily describe, illustrate through example, and teach the basic functions of these programs for students to use them in either personal or professional capacities.

American History

I two Bachelor's degrees spanning four disciplines: Literature, Philosophy, Spanish, and International Studies; and, I am finishing my Master's degree in International Relations--a branch of Political Science. These cumulative degrees mean I have studied American history properly as well as from "foreign" perspectives, (i.e., the history of US foreign policy, the US as global partner, US involvement in foreign wars etc). I have a keen understanding of US history as seen through the lenses of literature, art, and philosophy, as well as its more traditionally "historical" roles (political and military).

Desktop Publishing

As Communications Manager of the Indiana Humanities Council I used Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to create flyers, brochures, event programs, marketing one-sheets, and promotional bookmarks. As Program Manager at the Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly I used these two programs to create between 3-5 In-House ads for the magazine every quarter. I have more recently used these programs to develop marketing and training materials for the Sagamore Institute.

I can quickly and easily describe, illustrate through example, and teach the basic functions of these programs for students to use them in either personal or professional capacities.

Furthermore for two years a the Poetry Editor of the Ball State undergraduate literary arts magazine and later for two years as the Features Editor for a non-profit newsletter I used these programs to layout newspapers and magazines. In a recent assignment I used Microsoft Publisher to produce a newsletter for the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

English

I have a BA in English with a minor in Creative Writing. I have also taken advanced classes in Legal Research and Writing and the Theory and Practice of Editing. I have worked for twelve years as freelance marketing writer. I have also worked in several positions in Communications for federal and state government as well as for non-profits. I have recently started a new venture working on more advanced projects doing policy research and writing. In high school I took the mandatory English classes but also: Semantics and Word Power. I spent three years on the Debate team--two years as co-president, and two years on the Speech team. I am certain I can help you meet and exceed all the goals you have for your English classes whether you need help in grammar, structure, style, literature, vocabulary, or research skills.

Film

In addition to coursework done in the Semiotics of Mexican Cinema I took in Mexico, I have also been a screener for the Indianapolis International Film festival. Part of our collective duty as screeners was to watch, discuss, and evaluate a film's merits for potential inclusion in the festival. Moreover, my literature degree, while not preparing me to discuss jump cuts or the relative merits of diegetic or non-diegetic sound, did prepare me to discuss the ways artists create narrative (opposed to "plot"). While the written word demands close scrutiny of word choice, diction, sentence length, and descriptive juxtaposition, the filmmaker uses lighting, costume, camera angles, editing, and scenic juxtapostion. The tools differ, but the goals are similar.

Logic

I have both a minor in Philosophy from Ball State University and a major in Philosophy from Indiana University. Both tracts required a course in Logic. The latter was purely Propositional logic; the former was more a broad-based introduction to Syllogistic, Propositional, and Predicate logic.

I have some passing familiarity also with Logic as it shows up in computer programming and general mathematics, but this is generally outside my area of expertise.

However, logic, logical systems, and how we use them to discipline our thinking are important, even critical, concepts for anyone in any field. I am excited to walk students through this seemingly overly-rigid world to show its real-world applications and practical effects.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is a standard tool of the modern office. It is used to read, write, and respond to emails as well as archive, categorize, and prioritize them. It used to manage contacts. It is also an important tool for managing a calendar, scheduling events and meetings. Calendars can be shared between co-workers as well as used to check schedules and invite co-workers to meetings or other office events.

I have used Outlook in professional settings since 1999 to manage my own office space. I have also used Outlook in an "executive assistant" function where I managed the calendar of senior level executives, and in an Office Services capacity, where our team used Outlook to manage shared office resources: projectors, sound equipment, and conference rooms.

I can introduce new users to Outlook's major functions as well as demonstrate intermediate level functions to streamline repetitive tasks as a means of improving workplace efficiency.

Microsoft Publisher

While my software of choice for Desktop Publishing is Adobe InDesign, sometimes cost or compatibility becomes an issue. In these cases, Microsoft Publisher is a powerful tool to which many people, especially in an office running Microsoft Office, already have access.

I have used Microsoft Publisher to create attractive newsletters for organization of all sizes including, most recently, the US Department of Health and Human Services--International Response Programs Branch. I have also used it to design flyers, posters, and brochures for a wide variety of non-profit organizations including the Organization for a New Eastside, Forum for Animal Rights, and the Indianapolis Vegetarian Society.

The program is intuitive and many of its commands resemble those used in Word-although familiarity with Word is not required to understand and use Publisher effectively.

I can introduce new users to the major functions available in Publisher to produce attractive brochures, flyers, posters, certificates, newsletters, even business forms to fit almost any personal or professional requirement.

Political Science

In addition to a bachelor's degree in International Studies (with a specialization in political science) and a master's degree in International Relations (a political science discipline) I have also worked for several years in and with government agencies. I was the treasurer of a county political party and an elected precinct chair in that county.

Proofreading

I have a BA in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing. I have also taken specific writing courses one in Legal Research & Writing and another in the Theory and Practice of Editing. In addition to my coursework I have also run my own freelance writing and editing business since 2000. In that time I have edited a wide variety of pieces including ad copy, research papers, Masters theses, dissertation chapters, and book manuscripts.

Public Speaking

I took my first Speech/Public Speaking course in high school. I wish I could say I fell immediately in love with it, but like many people I suffered from severe anxiety in the face of presenting to the public. At the request of a friend I joined the Debate team. Despite my severe nervousness, having him next me encouraged me to perform at a high level. The next year, I joined the Speech Team as well.

In college I took both introductory speech as well advanced communications courses (Diplomacy and Power). As a student of Spanish I was required to give one oral presentation in each of my 15 classes, in Spanish. As a requirement of my Capstone course I presented for an hour in front of a panel of evaluators which included a 15 minute Question-and-Answer period...all in Spanish.

As a Communications professional I have been regularly called upon to talk to media and the public in regard to corporate policies and to provide official corporate responses. Within the confines of the corporation, I have given countless presentations on upcoming projects, summary reports, and progress notes. I have given these presentation to subordinates, management, and senior executives including boards of directors.

Public speaking is not just the art and craft of the stand up comedian and the Toast Master, it is a regular part of modern corporate life. I can tutor in the subject of Public Speaking as well as provide useful notes to help students perfect real-life performances.

Social Studies

Social studies is a broad topic consisting in parts of Government, Civics, History, and Sociology. I am uniquely qualified to teach young students in any of the specific topics that make up "social studies" as well as the less specialized field itself. I am a practicing social scientists doing research primarily on modern African business and Modern Mexican public policy. But I have degrees in International Studies, International Relations, Spanish, Philosophy, and Literature. I have worked in state government, in the federal government, and for major political parties. Through the course of my expansive education I have taken classes in American History, World History, Mexican History, Law, American Government, Sociology, and Anthropology.

Whether having trouble with specific classroom concepts or in applying to the world at-large, I can help guide students through the early stages of the field I first fell in love with and at which I came to be employed.

Study Skills

I graduated Ball State with over 180 credit hours (earning me a BA in Literature and minors in Japanese, Philosophy and Creative Writing). I returned to school five years later and received a triple major in Spanish, Philosophy, and International Studies. I am currently finishing my Master's in International Relations. For a recent research paper I taught myself R+, a statistical programming platform used by political scientists (and others). For a recent research project for a policy research center I taught myself SQL/myPHP and CSS. I am currently teaching myself how to program in Python and advanced statistical techniques in preparation for my future doctoral studies. In other words, I am a life-long learner with a specific interest in how the brain works so that we can learn more and learn better. No matter what the subject, no matter what your level, I can help make your study time more efficient so you can achieve whatever academic goals you set for yourself.

Writing

I have a BA in English Literature with a minor creative writing. I worked at Wiley Publishing for five years before returning to school. During that time I performed coursework specifically on the theory and practice of editing and legal research and writing. I have run my own freelance writing/editing business since 2000 writing mostly PR/Marketing pieces but also academic papers, government reports, grants, and private research studies. In that time I have edited everything from poems and short stories to Master's theses to diet/healthy living books. I am familiar with most major citation styles (Chicago, GPO, AP, APA and MLA).
