About Lisa

Hello potential students! I have a BA in Photocommunications, which is a combination of photography, journalism, fine art and video production. I make my living as a web content writer and graphic designer. I love working with young people and helping them to understand the mechanics and beauty of language and literature. As a world traveler I also enjoy bringing History to life for kids and helping them see it's not just about memorizing dates. As an outdoor's person, the beauty and science of nature has always fascinated me and I love seeing kids grasp the concepts of this incredible cycle. I also enjoy taking the fear and apprehension out of math for young people and helping them to see that math can be the easiest of all the subjects once basic concepts are understood because there is little room for interpretation. As a tutor I would endeavor to not only teach your kids but mentor them and help them find the love of learning and make them see it as a life long passion. Hello potential students! Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I have been using InDesign for the past 8 years as a graphic designer in the ad agency, print shop and ecommerce environments. I have used it to create anything from business cards and letter head to catalogs and informational booklets.

Adobe Photoshop

I have ten years experience using Photoshop for photo enhancing and retouching. I am a graphic designer and production artist working in an ad agency and print shop environment so am well versed in the effective use of photoshop in conjunction with the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite.

American History

I minored in history in college and enjoy learning about history from all countries, especially US history. I think it's important to understand where we have come from and how we built what we have today. I like to try to bring history alive for students, not just memorize dates or outline chapters but generate a genuine interest in the subject.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have volunteered with many after school programs to teach study skills as well as time management techniques. I can help students come up with their own organizational system and assess what kind of studying is most effective for them and makes the best use of their time. I worked with the Boys and Girls clubs as well as federally funded tutoring programs with students of all ages, primarily from 3rd grade to 10th, including those with learning differences.

I have been a graphic designer for fifteen years. I use a Mac daily with the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite as well. I can assist students in basic fundamentals of Mac computing and advance use as well.

Study Skills

I have worked with after school programs and mentoring programs to help kids find a system of organization that works best for them. We also assisted in helping them to discover what study methods were most effective for them. Most of the kids in the program were between 6th to 10th grade but all ages were welcome. Some kids had special needs such as ADHD or perception problems so I have had some experience working with those students as well. The program was very successful and parents reported that grades went up and time management and motivation were also greatly improved.
