About Alec

Hello!

My name is Alec, and I am excited to help others in the Denver Metro area learn. I would really appreciate the opportunity to tutor anyone in math and/or science.

A little about myself:

I attended high school in the Denver metro area, graduating with honors in 2005. I then pursued my Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. During my time at the private university I tutored college freshmen and some local high school seniors in a computer engineering course over the summer. I thoroughly enjoyed my time helping others grasp engineering concepts and want to continue this passion in the Denver area.

After graduating from ERAU, I worked at Cobham Aerospace in Prescott, Arizona for over 2 years designing aircraft electronics such as emergency location transmitters and communications devices. In October 2011 I left Cobham to fill a position as a mechanical engineer at the Knolls Atomic Power Lab in upstate NY where I supported structural design of nuclear reactors. The mountains were calling me back, however, so I recently took a position as a structural analyst for United Launch Alliance in Centennial, Colorado where I support the development of rockets.

I have a strong background in mathematics and engineering sciences. I am very passionate about education and I know I can help anyone in their studies.

I am also very experienced in many CAD software programs including Catia, SolidWorks, Creo, and Sketchup. I would happily instruct anyone in the basics of these programs too.

I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Computer

I have grown up with computers. I have become very comfortable with almost every function on Microsoft Windows operating systems. I also have limited network experience including setting up wired and wireless home networks.

Mechanical Engineering

I have become very familiar with mechanical engineering design concepts and principles throughout my education and career. I studied Aerospace Engineering with an emphasis on Astronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ.

Aerospace engineering really is just a more specific focus when related to mechanical engineering. I demonstrated this by getting my first job out of college as a mechanical engineer at Cobham Aerospace. There I practiced industry standards in design such as ASME Y14.5 and honed my skills in the application of engineering in a manufacturing environment.

After two years at Cobham Aerospace I got a new job at the Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Niskayuna, NY. I hold this job today and am a practicing mechanical engineer where I contribute to the structural analysis of nuclear reactor components.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for a few years now in a professional setting. I have worked for two employers that use MS Outlook as their exclusive mail client. During this time I have grown very comfortable with the many ins and outs of the software since I use the program every day.

I take pride in knowing as much detail about any software I use. I am familiar with the basics such as: creating and sending emails, creating calendar appointments, and creating tasks and I am comfortable with more complicated functions including: email rules and alerts, and merging contact lists.

Microsoft Windows

I have been operating PCs with Microsoft Windows my entire life. I have used every major release of MS Windows form the early days of Windows 3.1 through Windows 95, XP, Vista, and now 7.

I have become very comfortable with the operating system and have often taken the time to help coworkers, friends, and family to get the most out of their computing experience.

Proofreading

During my undergraduate and post-graduate studies in engineering (B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering respectively) I have spent much time improving my technical writing skills. I have applied my writing skills in complex industries including aviation electronics and nuclear power research. I take great pride in my ability to communicate effectively through technical writing.

Very Patient

Alec has tutored my 17 year old son in math. My son finds him to be very easy to talk with, he says he understands the material when Alec explains it, and Alec doesn't mind explaining material more than once. My son has had several tutors and Alec is the only one that he has actually asked to go and meet with. I find him to be extremely flexible in terms of scheduling and I wouldn't hesitate to
