About Christopher

I believe that if you use a student's interests to connect with the lesson, they can learn to love learning. I am very good at establishing relationships with young learners. I believe with those two pillars can make every child successful (academically, socially, and in raising self confidence).

I am very data orientated for two reasons:
1. I can explain to you exactly what progress we are making
2. It informs my lesson planning. People learn in different ways, and if a lesson didn't take, the data helps me figure out why, and how to fix it.

I have taught phonics in a Public Schools setting for several years. I have experience with Leveled Literacy Intervention, Guided Reading Plus, and ReadWell (all three are research -based programs). I hit decoding, word patterns and sight words hard. I also believe that fun phonics games can be a good teacher and a powerful motivator.

I have taught reading intervention for several years. I always pair a phonics lesson with a book that highlights that phonics rule. I teach students how to have a meaningful discussions about the book. I introduce the book, and we talk about any related experiences, background information and connections. I read the book with them, prompting for accuracy and fluency when needed. Then we discuss the meaning/message/lesson/facts of the book together, developing students critical thinking skills.

I have also taught math intervention for several years. I am very good a math, but unlike most math teachers, I have worked hard to understand how children see math and break it down to the very basics. Yes, I will teach the standard algorithms, but first I will make sure they have mastered the underlying concepts. I believe too many kids learn the algorithm, but have no idea what they are doing or why. Then they get to word problems, and struggle. I have also taken a CGI (cognitive guided instruction) mathematics course.

I can't wait to work with your students! Don't hesitate to reach out to me for questions or scheduling information. I know i might cost a little more than some of the high school and college tutors here, but I'n very good at what I do-- I'm worth it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BS in psychology, a Master's in Educational Psychology, and a Colorado State Teaching License for elementary Education, with an enforcement in Special Education.

Geometry

I took many higher level math course in college, including geometry. I have taught 4 grade geometry for years, and remember pretty much all of it.

Reading

I have earned a graduate degree in Education. And I have nine years of experience with Denver Public Schools. I also have an endorsement in Special Education. I have held positions in math intervention, reading intervention, special education and 5th grade. And I have trained in many systems and assessments. Additionally, I work well with k-college.

Reading and Writing Tutor

Great attitude, ability to connect, patient and hard working. Our daughter can be a challenge at times and we are glad to have Chris as our tutor. He has been able to connect where others have failed. He has been able to get her on the right track and stay focused on the task at hand. Looking forward to seeing some solid progress over the next few visits.
