About Edward

My graduate training, scholarly productivity, classroom effectiveness, and professional experience mean I can contribute to the success your student. In addition to teaching graduate level courses at Walden University, I teach and have designed a range of leadership courses at The University of the Rockies. I am also visiting associate professor in the humanities at the University of Maryland University College and teach introduction to religion at the University of Wyoming and introduction to philosophy at Pikes Peak Community College.

I love teaching and it shows. Recent course evaluations have included these observations:

*** Being in your class is what I really needed, it came at a time in my life when I was wondering around "aimlessly" searching for answers… You pushed me and challenged me in ways that I have never been challenged before (academically). It is with this that I say "Thank You" for challenging and pushing me!
*** wanted to let you know that I learned much more than just the subject material in … classes with you. One lesson I began to learn and appreciate over the series of courses with you was how to listen for meaning in what people are talking about besides the content of what is being said, and maintaining dignity and sensitivity to others in civil discourse.

*** I also want to take the opportunity to say a HUGE thank YOU for being an excellent instructor. I also teach on-line and am so inspired by your abilities to engage on-line learners through your discussion posts and participation. Thank you for a great experience.

*** I really enjoyed your class. I prefer to take face-to-face courses when they are available, but in this online course you were very active in the conferences and moving them along, which provided for some stimulating dialogues. The course approach was much more organized and less abstract than I expected, and I genuinely feel that I am much better informed on the anthropological and psychological perspectives of mythology.

*** Thank you very much for your words of encouragement and solace; they gave me a second wind to forge forward.

I have had a career-long engagement with pedagogy as well. I carried primary responsibility for all programs in teaching and learning at the American Academy of Religion. I staffed the committee on teaching and learning and facilitated workshops on evaluating teaching, curriculum, and student outcomes assessment across the country. Earlier this year, I completed Sloan Consortium training in group work for online courses. I am also trained in student personnel administration, a program that has provided me with insights into adult teaching and learning I still practice today.

As a scholar of the sociology of organizations, I earned my Ph.D. from Emory University exploring the human and symbolic capital needed by organizations as they engage stakeholders in positive change. These credentials and my history of leadership in nonprofit organizations mean I have the practical, hands-on experience to give students the skills to become successful in complex and diverse subjects.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
