I have been teaching ESL/EFL since 1993, including TOEFL classes and Accent Reduction. I have taught students of many different ages, from many different countries and with many different abilities and levels of English. I have taught academic English to university students, basic English to new immigrants, conversation English to students in Japan, Costa Rica and Mexico and English, to adults working on the factory floor and to the CEO of the company. I teach all four areas of English--reading, writing, listening, speaking. My students have learned English and also enjoyed the classes. I use a student-centered, interactive approach to teach English and I customize the lessons to fit the student's needs, interests and learning styles. My students appreciate my understanding, patient, and empathic manner. My students know that I understand the trials and rewards of learning a new language and of adjusting to a new country.
I am also a licensed Elementary School teacher. I taught second grade for 6 years and home schooled my daughters until they went to high school. I am very experienced in teaching reading, phonics, spelling and writing to children and adults. I have been teaching ESL/EFL since 1993, including TOEFL classes and Accent Reduction. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught second grade for 6 years in Illinois and I home schooled my two daughters until they went to high school. I enjoy teaching children and try to make the learning fun for them. I will individualize my teaching for each student's needs, interests, and abilities. Students need to work hard, but they will have fun at the same time. I would rather not tutor right after school because I feel that the students need time to relax, play outside and have some free time before starting their tutoring sessions. Also, for young children, an hour is as long as they are able to concentrate and benefit from tutoring. I would also need to know how the child is being taught at school, so that I don't use exactly the same methods by which they have already tried to learn. They need a new approach to hopefully see the learning from a different perspective.
I try to make the tutoring sessions fun, relaxed and beneficial for the students.
I have been teaching ESL for 17 years. I started out in community education, teaching immigrants from many different countries and with many different ability and English levels. After teaching there for a few years I taught conversation English in Japan and in Mexico. .Later I taught university students from other countries who needed to take the Toefl test. I also have taught individuals who needed better English for their jobs--from CEOs to factory workers. I have taught all levels of English and all four areas--reading, writing, listening speaking. I have recently returned from a year of teaching English in Costa Rico.
I use a student-centered approach and customize my lessons for each student or group, depending on what they need to learn and what their interests are. I am an empathic, understanding, patient teacher, but also expect my students to work hard and practice a lot outside of class. It is impossible to learn a language (or anything else) without practicing every day. My students enjoy my classes and me and I enjoy working with them.
I taught second grade for 6 years in Illinois and phonics is one of my specialties in teaching reading. At times, phonics has gone out of favor and whole word learning was in favor for a while, but I always used phonics to teach reading and spelling even when it was out of favor, since phonics will help children to sound out unfamiliar words the meet. Many methods are used to teach and learn reading and all of them help in their own way, but phonics remains one of the best ways to teach and learn reading and spelling.
