I am a musician, composer and educator with experience teaching piano, music theory, composition/song-writing, music history & appreciation, and choir/voice. I specialize in musical theatre but also have a solid training from Harvard College in Western classical music and other genres. I studied composition as an undergraduate at Harvard college, and have continued primarily in the area of musical theatre song-writing. I received my MFA in Musical Theatre Writing (as a composer) at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. I have taught composition and song-writing in a wide variety of styles.

I have worked with students of all ages but specialize in teaching preteens, teens, and adults, including older beginners and intermediate and advanced musicians. I have worked with many students who are self-taught, learning from youtube videos and apps or by ear but want to deepen their piano technique and music literacy. I am passionate about music technology and well-versed in the best online tools for developing music literacy and learning music theory. I work with my students on repertoire that excites them from many different styles of music including classical; music for film, television, and video games; pop; and musical theatre. Some of my students are focused specifically on piano performance while others are interested in a combination of piano, voice, music theory, and composition or songwriting. My teaching practice is constantly evolving and I am highly attuned to the individual needs of each of my students. As a child, I flourished with teachers who recognized and encouraged my innate musicality. I believe that every musician regardless of experience level can communicate through musical choices. I've taught music in the classroom and in private lessons for 15 years, in New York City and at international schools around the world.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I received rigorous training in aural skills and musicianship as an undergraduate music major at Harvard College, and have continued to build my own skills throughout my career as a choral director, composer and music director for theater. I have taught ear training to students of all ages and ability levels. I provide a carefully scaffolded approach that provides an appropriate level of challenge to any student. In addition, I am passionate about music technology and have explored and assessed numerous apps and websites that provide structured and sequenced practice in the skills being learned. Some of the skills I help my students to develop are: - aural recognition of scale degrees using solfege and/or numbers - identifying simple melodic patterns by ear - identifying rhythmic patterns by ear - recognizing melodic and harmonic intervals by ear - melodic and rhythmic dictation - recognizing triad quality in chords and arpeggios - identifying modes and scales by ear - playing choral accompaniment by ear - understanding and identifying seventh chords - recognizing common harmonic progressions - identifying meter and hyper meter by ear

I have been refining my teaching practice for years to find ways to teach music theory concepts and aural skills in different ways that work for each student. Whether you are a beginner or a graduate student, I will find an approach that helps you truly understand and internalize the concepts. I am dedicated to making music theory practical and meaningful to your musical interests, whether you are a performer, composer/arranger/songwriter, educator or musicologist. I've spent a lot of time testing out and selecting different apps and online tools as well, so in addition to helping you in our meetings I can help to customize drills that will reinforce music theory and musicianship skills that you are looking to build in your independent practice. Some of the many topics I can teach are: -Music literacy: understanding and fluently reading notation for pitch and rhythm -Scales, key signatures and modes -Meter, time signatures; irregular meters and hypermeter -Chords and inversions -Harmony and melody -Form and structure -Analysis of western art music (“classical music”), popular music in all styles, and music from cultures around the world -Post-tonal theory My personal training in music theory includes a bachelor's degree in music from Harvard, an MFA in musical theatre writing for Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, and a year of PhD coursework in at the CUNY Graduate Center.

I love teaching sight-singing. I have enjoyed participating in and conducting choral music for many years and have always been an excellent sight-singer. My music training involved advanced sight-singing (chromatic and atonal music) and I include sight-singing training in all of my vocal music classes.
Songwriting

Songwriting

Song-writing for musical theatre is one of my deepest passions. I received my MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, and previously participated in the New Opera and Musical Theatre Initiative (a musical theatre writers' workshop in the Boston area) and in the BMI workshop in New York. I have taught songwriting courses to teens with great success in genres of their choice.

Helping a Struggling College Music Student

Lisa is incredibly knowledgeable and patient with what she does. I am a second year music theory student who has been struggling a lot in my classes. It has been the hardest task for me to find a music theory tutor online that can even help me on the level of theory we cover in the class. Lisa as soon as I found her was excited not only to meet and help me, but also to go over the material as I can tell this is a subject she is passionate about. Her attitude and helpfulness changed the perspective I went into my homework with and I recommend her to anyone, especially college aged, if you are looking for a little extra help.

Ear Training for College Music Major

Lisa is great! We have worked on harmonic and rhythmic transcriptions together, and Lisa is always able to break concepts down into smaller chunks to help me understand. Lisa has given me helpful practice resources/online programs to improve my skills as well! Lisa is very knowledgeable and I highly recommend lessons with them to any college music major! I am currently taking Aural Skills 2 (out of a 4 course Aural Skills sequence), and Lisa is great at helping me with all of my Aural Skills needs.

Helpful Tutor

Lisa has been a very big help for my daughter. My daughter is currently learning AP Music Theory and developing her aural skills has been a particular struggle. During lessons, Lisa helps with many aspects of aural skills, including melodic dictation, interval identification, and melodic progressions. After each lesson, Lisa give assignments to do each day to further review and develop skills outside of tutoring sessions. Overall, I would recommend Lisa as a tutor for anyone needs a helping hand with ear training!

Lisa is the best!

Lisa is great! She is patient, focused, fun, and understanding. I am an adult learner and sometimes I just think I will not get a new concept. But then, during class, she always breaks things down in a way that doesn't look scary at all and it's easy to understand. She respects my pace and my unique ways to learn. She also tailors homework according to my availability throughout the week and the lesson's level of difficulty. That is great for people with a varying workload like me.
