About Gregory

I am currently a librarian for the Denver Public Library, and also an experienced tutor and teacher, having helped students with the SAT, ACT, AP and SHSAT exams. My specialty is English composition and reading comprehension, along with Latin (I have experience tutoring for the AP Latin Vergil exam and Julius Caesar's Gallic Commentaries) and some Russian, Chinese and French. I have an MFA in writing, having written several novels and short stories.

I can also teach painting, drawing, history and philosophy. My interests are broad and I hope to share some of my accumulated knowledge through the years with new students.

I live in Southeast Denver, but I am willing to travel for the right job. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I learned chess at an early age and have been passionate about the game ever since. I have been teaching chess to both old and young. I played for the CSU chess team and finished second at the Mountain West Invitational in 1998. I am currently rated ELO 2000 on redhotpawn and I have won a number of online tournaments.

I would love to teach anyone the beauties and intricacies of the game. Please contact me for a introductory session.

Drawing

I have been drawing all my life. My style ranges from detailed and realistic, to the humorous and cartoony. I use primarily pencil, but also pen, brush and charcoal. Please ask to see some samples.

Painting

I paint in oils and acrylics, having around thirty paintings that range from historical themes to portraits of myself and friends. I have a minor in Painting and Art History from Colorado State University, and I hope to pass my expertise and enthusiasm on to willing students. For examples of my work, contact me and I'll attach several photos of my paintings. Thank you.

SSAT

As a former teacher and experienced tutor, I have helped many students achieve excellent scores on both the SSAT and the SHSAT exams. My teaching style is lively and I freely give pointers on how to best improve your test score through time management and POE techniques.
