Hi, I'm Melissa! I have been teaching high school math in D49 for three years. Before that, I worked in at an elementary school in D2 doing math intervention. I love helping struggling learners! I have always loved tutoring, I started helping at an elementary school when I was in high school and I was hooked. From there I have tutored elementary school through college students. In college I worked in an elementary school and loved seeing the different ways teachers showed material and seeing the students learn and improve their math skills and confidence throughout the year. Now I get to teach high school students! I mainly teach Pre-Algebra and Geometry content.

I love teaching struggling learners! There is nothing better than seeing a student gain confidence in something they once thought was impossible to learn. I like to focus on foundational skills and "gaps" in knowledge along with current content so students are more prepared to continue to master material going forward. I also like to focus on understanding content instead of just memorizing steps, so students can reason through problems even when they forget the algorithm. I like to do activities instead of just practicing problems on a worksheet over and over. I tutor most math topics: Elementary level, middle school, pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and test prep.

I am here whether you want to catch up on math from last year, or get ahead for next year, we can work together so all students can see success! Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson.

Elementary Education

Common Core,

Common Core

When I worked in an elementary school as a math interventionist, I followed curriculum built around common core techniques. I continue to offer those strategies to students in my classes every year. Some students like them and others do not, but we celebrate the many ways we learn!
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored K-8th grade over the years, and every level of math in-between. In the school setting, I worked with 3rd-5th grade students as a math interventionist, coaching students toward grade level achievement.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I just finished my third school year teaching high school math in D49. I like to teach the foundational courses so I know students are set up for success in later years! Algebra is such an important class because EVERYTHING after it is built on the skills you learn.

Geometry,

Geometry

I have taught geometry for the past two school years (2018 to 2020). I teach the CPM curriculum, but I am flexible and can teach based off of whatever type of curriculum your school uses. I like Geometry because it is so visual, often students who struggle with other types of math have an easier time understanding Geometry. I try to show students WHY everything works that we can show.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Although I teach high school students, I focus on foundational Algebra skills and teach mostly Pre-Algebra concepts. I love teaching Pre-Algebra because I can fill in gaps from Elementary and Middle School years that students didn't learn as well and also move forward with Algebraic thinking. Most students have good intuition regarding Algebraic thinking, they just get overwhelmed by new vocabulary and notation. I like to start with showing students what they are capable of, and then begin introducing more standard vocabulary/notation once they feel comfortable with the content.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have been teaching high school math for three years now, and one of the courses I have taught is an SAT Math Prep course. SAT Prep is all about reading test questions well and determining how to use the skills you have to reason through the question being posed. I find many students struggle with the math section -- not necessarily because their math skills are lacking, but because they need practice and coaching to learn how to read the questions for comprehension and apply the skills they have.
