About Stirling

Bio

I love teaching music because every student has a different way of processing and relating to music. No two people have the same taste in music, and you might get something completely different out of a piece of music than I do. Because music is so individual and personal, I tend to learn as much from my students as they do from me. I love the window into another person's mind I get when I teach and tutor, figuring out what works for them and what doesn't.

No two people have the same taste in music, and you might get something completely different out of a piece of music than I do. Because music is so individual and personal, I tend to learn as much from my students as they do from me. I love the window into another person's mind I get when I teach and tutor, figuring out what works for them and what doesn't.

My musical background couldn't be more eclectic. Growing up in Saudi Arabia, I became accustomed to hearing Arabic traditional and contemporary music on a daily basis. By taking violin lessons from an early age, I also became familiar with the Western classical repertoire. At Berklee College of Music, I studied under such disparate figures as Palestinian oud virtuoso Simon Shaheen, psychoacoustician Susan Rogers, and vocalist and Bobby McFerrin collaborator Joey Blake. I have sung, arranged, and provided vocal percussion for multiple a cappella groups. I am also deeply interested in the music of various world cultures, and have played and studied West African, Indian, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, and Afro-Cuban music.

I hold a B.A. in music from Colorado College, where I studied composition, music theory, music history, jazz and classical piano, jazz guitar, and Balinese gamelan.

Knowledgeable, Flexible and Friendly!

Sterling helped my son with an entry-level online Music Theory class. Without his help, my son would not have completely understood the lessons. Stirling was so helpful in reviewing the lesson material and ensuring my son was on the right track with homework. Highly recommend Stirling! He's excellent!
