About Jason

I have 20 years experience in software development and computer science. I enjoyed tutoring students way back in my college days. I have my own home lab for testing computer networking and virtualization technology such as VMware, VirtualBox, and OpenStack. I love to pass along what I know.

I have a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics. I'm one of those people that has done a little bit of everything. Virtualization such as VMware, OpenStack, or Virtualbox. Computer networking. Software development in a number of languages including Python, JavaScript, AngularJS, HTML, CSS and beyond.

If it's at all related to computer science, software development, or generally technical in nature, I can probably help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I actually started writing code in BASIC as a kid. I've worked for 20 years between Hewlett-Packard, Fluke Networks, and Viavi Solutions writing software used for network test solutions. Long ago I wrote in C++. Python is my favorite language. I've also done Java and JavaScript / HTML / CSS. I encourage everyone to learn about the "SOLID" principles for OO design which can be applied to any of these languages.

Computer Science

I have a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics, and 20 years experience in the field. Generally I can handle any topic related to this subject.

JavaScript

I've built GUIs in AngularJS, tests written with Protractor. I've completed numerous courses on Code School related to JavaScript development. It should be noted that JavaScript is nothing like Java.

Linux

I started using Linux when I entered college. Virtual environments such as VMware or Oracle VirtualBox are a great way for beginners to experiment with Linux. I've used it daily throughout my 20 year career. The network test product I've worked on for the last 7 years runs on either SLES or RedHat. At home I use the free variants, SUSE or CentOS. I've also used Debian and Ubuntu for small projects on the BeagleBone Black.

Networking (Computer)

I've spent 20 years working on network related test tools for Hewlett-Packard, Fluke Networks, and most recently Viavi Solutions. I know the OSI model, numerous network technologies such as IP, TCP, UDP, DHCP, DNS, VLANs and beyond. I have a pretty sizable rack of equipment in my home for testing and protyping network and server configurations. In short, this is one of my strongest subjects having done it for so long.

Python

Extensive experience with Python. I've built automated test frameworks for a number of software projects. I've taken a week-long course in Python just for the experience, but I could as easily have been the person teaching the course. This is probably my #1 favorite language to work in.

UNIX

Linux would be more accurate. I've worked with RedHat, SUSE, CentOS, Debian, you name it. I'm as comfortable working in Linux as I am Windows.
