About Jan

I am a retired elementary educator with experience in multiple grade levels. I spent many years as a classroom teacher and Literacy Resource Teacher in Colorado Springs District 11 as well as a several years as a building administrator. My experience ranges from special needs students to gifted learners. All children are my passion. (My husband and I raised five children in our blended family!)

My area of expertise is Literacy - Reading, Writing, Spelling, Vocabulary - but I also have experience with tutoring Math. I have been fortunate to have extensive training in instructional pedagogy in literacy and math. I work hard to make learning fun during our tutoring sessions by using real-world experiences, games, and play. Learning is an exciting feeling, and I believe that children should be enjoying themselves.

My qualifications in Reading include a Masters in Teaching Reading from UCCS. I am also a trainer of the Colorado Department of Education's READing Foundations Academy and a former local certified trainer for LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling).

My experience in almost all of the grade levels gives me the knowledge of where a student comes from academically and where they are going or need to go. I have taught in first, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classrooms. My Literacy Resource Teacher experience as well as recent substitute teacher experience gave me some time in Kindergarten and second grade.

The LETRS program mentioned previously provides teachers with a strong foundation in understanding the importance of teaching phonics alongside comprehension and rich language. I have also been trained in Orton-Gillingham and HillRAP methodologies for helping students with difficulties in mastering phonics and phonemic awareness.

I hope that you will give me the opportunity to create a warm, accepting yet rigorous tutoring environment for your child. I am available most days from 7 am until 7 pm. Just contact me and let's talk about creating success for your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I started my teaching career in the intermediate grades (4, 5 & 6). When I received my Masters of Arts in Teaching Reading, I wanted to really teach children to read, so I switched to first grade. In my 25+ years of experience, I have taught or supported teachers in all grade levels including 7th and 8th grade remedial reading. I understand the progression of skills through the grades so that I can move a child from where he/she is currently to where he or she needs to be.

Handwriting

I am able to support any handwriting programs used in the schools whether they are the Zaner-Bloser method or the D'Nealian handwriting method. I use a brain integration method to help students learn the correct direction in which to move their pencil so that writing flows smoothly from pencil to paper. This method can be used with either kind of handwriting, including cursive.

Phonics

I am qualified to teach phonics because I have had extensive training in phonemic awareness and phonics methodologies. I believe that phonics is a crucial skill to master in order to be a skilled reader. The strategies that I use activate areas of the brain that provide strong connections between the phonological processor and the orthographic (spelling/writing) processor.
