About Alexandra

I have an MS in special education, a special education teaching license, and 9 years of experience with students both in and out of the classroom. When a student is not understanding something, we must adjust the way we teach. My training and experience as a special education teacher have given me the skills to create and present lessons in a way that is catered specifically to each student's needs.

I have an extensive background in Applied Behavior Analysis and creating intensive programming for students with autism and other disabilities. I also have experience teaching students who are at grade level or falling behind. Motivation is key to learning, so I take the time to get to know the student and create lessons that make learning fun and engaging.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had multiple students with ADD/ADHD both in the classroom and as a private tutor. I utilize a variety of tools to help students with ADHD, and I individualize my approach to each student's needs. I also have a degree and teaching credential that have given my the tools to teach students who are struggling with symptoms of ADHD.

Aspergers

I have an MS in special education and a current special education teaching certification. I have worked with students with ASD for over 10 years both in-home and in the classroom. Many of my students were "high functioning" or had a diagnosis of Aspergers or PDD.

Autism

I have been teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorders for over 10 years, and it is my area of expertise. I have extensive training in Applied Behavior Analysis, Verbal Behavior, and in strategies such as Discrete Trial Teaching, PECS, Natural Environment Teaching, and generalization training. I have used these and other strategies with students with autism to teach functional communication, academic skills, self-help skills, and to reduce problem behaviors such as aggression, tantrums, and self-injury. I have also trained staff and parents in these strategies while teaching at schools that specialize in autism and Applied Behavior Analysis.

CBEST

Having passed the CBEST before obtaining my teaching credential, I feel very confident with the content of the exam. I have taught skills tested in the exam throughout my career as a teacher. I can also adapt my teaching methods to match different learning styles to help prepare someone for the CBEST.

Common Core

As a special education teacher I work with Common Core standards and curriculum. I have received trainings through school districts on Common Core as well as teaching methodologies. I take skills that are highly conceptual and require critical thinking and break them down into smaller manageable components. When students have mastery of a component, I continue to build on that mastery.

Dyslexia

During my 10 years as an educator, I have had many students who have dyslexia. My degree and certification in special education have given me specialized training to work with students struggling with reading skills. I assess a student's current level and learning style to choose or adapt a curriculum or to create a more individualized approach.

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutored elementary aged students for 4 years before receiving my teaching certification, and I have taught for 6 years. As a teacher, most of my classrooms have been K-6, and it is my favorite age group to teach. I have taught students with a variety of skill levels including students at grade level and students falling behind.

Handwriting

My favorite curriculum to teach handwriting is Handwriting Without Tears. I have also worked closely with Occupational Therapists while teaching fine motor skills that help develop handwriting.

Phonics

I have used a variety of curriculum to teach reading and phonics skills as well as more individualized approaches. I also have a passing score in the RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) which was required for my teaching certification.

Special Needs

I have an MS in special education and a current special education teaching certification. I tutored students for 4 years before receiving my teaching certification, and I have taught for 6 years. I have had students ages 3-21, with a variety of disabilities, and a variety of different skill levels.
