About April

Bio

I am a former college professor who taught courses in introductory biology, cell biology, and genetics. I hold a PhD from Purdue University. In addition to teaching large and small classes, I spent much of my time in office hours tutoring one or a few students from my classes. The latter was the most enjoyable aspect of university teaching for me. I got to know my students individually: the struggles they were encountering, as well as their hopes and dreams. It was personally gratifying to me to be able to help students through their struggles and on the way to their dreams. For the last several years my focus has been developing and writing biology curriculum. Although I don't work directly with students, I never lose sight of the fact that I am writing to and for students. My writing has involved learning about concepts that are particularly challenging and why they are so challenging. Learning about this has emphasized the importance of using language carefully and clearly to make challenging concepts more understandable by students. While I have found my writing to be very interesting and fulfilling, I have missed interacting directly with students. Tutoring provides the opportunity for me to work with students again.

Because I believe that students learn and retain their understanding best when they construct knowledge for themselves, I tend to teach by asking strategic questions that help students put together what they already know, what they have read about in their textbooks, and what they have experienced in class. In this way they arrive at a deeper, more complete understanding of biology concepts. As students are constructing their own understanding I support them by providing information they have missed or explaining ideas that confused them. I also provide sample problems. I work through one or two problems with students and then listen as they work through one or two on their own. Listening as students work through a problem helps me to understand where they get stuck so that I can provide more targeted guidance and explanations.

Please contact me if you would like to meet for a (free) introductory session to see if you think I could help you in your studies.
