About David

I am a US Air Force officer who has served in the military for the past 22 years. I have previously taught at the college level, both undergraduate and graduate-level courses. Bottom line is I enjoy teaching and nothing satisfies me more than a student who after working on a problem or concept, suddenly "gets it". I challenge students to explain how they got to their answers, as opposed to just giving them the answers.

I have an engineering degree and a math/science background. Most importantly, I am a proud father of 4 wonderful children ranging in ages from elementary school through college. I have tutored them for the past 10+ years in every grade and every subject. I can provide a valuable one-on-one experience for any student, child or adult. I can help in all subjects elementary through middle school and math and sciences in high school and beyond. I am available most weeknights and weekends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and took 27 credits of math in college as part of this program, including Algebra I and II. I have also tutored 2 of my children in Algebra and starting with my 6th grader now.

Algebra 2

I completed 8 semesters of math in high school and have 27 credits of college math, to include: Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Differential Equations and Finite Numbers.

Fitness

I was a member and assistant coach of the US Military Pentathlon Team in 1994, 96, and 97 compting in land obstacle course, water obstacle course, marksmanship and orienteering against team from other NATO nations. My wife and I owned a women's-only fitness center from 2000-2003 called, Ladies Workout Express of South Bend (IN). I have been in the military for the past 20 years and have made fitness a part of my lifestyle. I exercise 4-5 times every week through running, swimming, cycling, and weightlifting.

Grammar

As part of my 2 Master's degrees, I was required to write a 25-page research paper as well as take written examinations. In addition, as a college instructor now, I grade and critique examinations and research papers routinely as part of the 4 courses I instruct. I grade not only on content but also on format, spelling and grammar.

Proofreading

As part of my current job as Associate Dean of a military college in Montgomery, Alabama, I am also an Adjunct instructor for 4 courses throughout the year. I routinely proofread students' papers as well as provide feedback on written evaluations and essays. On the average I review 26 papers per course, therefore I see over 100 papers per school year. I spend a lot of time reviewing, evaluating, and proofreading student work as part of my instructor duties.

Public Speaking

I am a 20-year military officer and have had plenty of public speaking opportunities as part of units I have led and also as a guest speaker. As a recent squadron commander, I spoke at over 20 different occasions and venues from my Commander's Calls to the Rotary Club to the New Hampshire Aviation Museum monthly lecture series. Currently, I am an instructor at a military graduate school and speak in front of my class of students several times a week.

Reading

First, I am an avid reader as well as read course materials for the 4 college courses I instruct. I read hundreds of pages a week sometimes. In addition, I have helped teach 3 of my 4 children to read throughout the years. They love reading and are voracious readers. I am currently working with our 4-year old identifying letters and sounds and progress to sounding out sentences.

Swimming

I swam competitively from ages 9-17 and coached a community swim team for 3 years and taught swimming lessons to all ages (infant to adult) for 5 years. In 1994, 96, and 97, I was a member and assistant coach of the US Military Pentathlon team that competed in events such as a water obstacle course and against other NATO nations. Since then I continue to lap swim on a weekly basis.

Track & Field

I have been a runner since I was a teenager and integrate running into my weekly exercise routine. In addition to competing on my high school track and field team for 4 years, I have run over 50 5K and 10K races and have completed 3 marathons. I run over 300 logged miles every year. I can train middle to long distance runners.

Vocabulary

I have a Bachelor's degree and 2 Master's degrees and have done a fair amount of writing. More recently, I am a College Professor and mentor and grade examinations and research papers on a regular basis. Each semester, I evaluate 300+ pages of student papers, commenting of contents, format, grammar, spelling and sentence/paragraph structure.
