About Elaine

I have been an English Teacher for 7 years, and I use my years of experience to help my pupils increase their skills in the areas of writing, reading, speaking and presentations. The students that I work with feel comfortable and empowered by my teaching techniques. Because I am still a licensed English Teacher, I can support any student to work with their current teachers' expectations to find success. I specialize in college prep course work and supporting students in improving their writing skills and helping them to build lasting confidence in their abilities. I want my students to find a love for reading and writing through using topics that are relevant to the specific student. Giving students the opportunity to grow and learn skills that will support their writing and reading through college is paramount rather than just getting a good grade on an assignment.

I also have an acting background that helps me support students in presenting projects and speaking skills. I am familiar with most technologies currently used in the classroom, and I am willing to learn any programs that my students may be asked to use for a presentation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

For this specific section of the ACT Test, I teach specific techniques that help students score higher on the test and save time on this section of the test. As a teacher of English, I specialized in grammar and writing skills and helped many students through my seven years master the basic skills needed to be successful on this test.

ACT Reading

I assisted students in test prep skills for ACT reading for over 7 years with a focus on test taking strategies and easy elimination of superfluous answers. I have experience in development of scaffolding techniques for weaker areas of content knowledge.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in Elementary classrooms of all ages for the past year. I took Elementary Education classes for my Master's Degree in Education and I have used those skills in Elementary classrooms for over a year. I am able to customize my lessons for the specific development of each of my students and I am patient and encouraging of all students.

English

I have been an English teacher for over seven years and love the study of literature and composition. I can help struggling students find a way to connect with difficult texts and improve their writing skills through fun writing activities or support with assignments given in their classes. I can help advanced students refine their writing and comprehension skills and offer challenging enrichment activities.

Literature

I have been a teacher of literature for over 14 years. I love helping students break down difficult texts into terms that they can relate to personally, and apply to writing assignments or multiple choice tests. I have taught multicultural literature, American Literature, World Literature, British Literature and Young Adult Fiction classes and love to discover new literature all the time.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used and taught PowerPoint and other presentation software for over 14 years. In addition to helping my clients use the software, I specialize in how to format and present your presentation information in an interesting and powerful way.

Microsoft Publisher

I have been using Publisher for my personal business for six years. As a teacher, I took continuing education courses that taught me how to apply Publisher to my course curriculum to help students create newsletters and other types of projects. I work with this program on a weekly basis to create publications.

Public Speaking

As a student, I competed in speech and debate for 5 years. I took multiple courses in college that taught public speaking techniques. As a high school English teacher, I was required to teach public speaking and have 7 years of experience teaching in this area. I also have an acting background, and I use many of those techniques to help my students prepare for presentations and public speaking in general.

Reading

As a teacher of reading and writing for over seven years, I have helped the beginning or struggling reader decode words and increase fluency through interesting reading selections and a calming, low-stress environment to learn. I focus on each student's individual needs and interests to help him or her feel comfortable and able to grow. With the advanced reader and writer, I bring in a variety of texts and writing assignments to help enrich his or her growth. I focus on each student's strengths and customize my lessons to fit each student's individual needs and growth.

Study Skills

I have been a high school English teacher for seven years. I taught classes that supported study skills and taught techniques to help students in my classes excel in their study skills. I have experience helping students break down larger assignments into manageable steps and help students to prioritize their tasks.

Writing

I excelled in analytical and creative writing as a student, even writing plays as a young child for all the children in my neighborhood. I have taken extensive courses on the education and development of writing skills through my college education and as a High School English Teacher for seven years. As a teacher of writing, I focus on helping my students develop their writing voice and build their skills and confidence in a variety of genres. I can help a student prepare for college level writing, college application processes, or technical writing for a specific job or project. I focus on a student's strengths to help build skills in weaker areas and I am always encouraging. I will customize my lessons to the individual needs of each student that I tutor.

Saw great improvement!

We asked Elaine to tutor my high schooler to help her feel more comfortable taking her ACTs. Elaine worked diligently with her on a weekly basis. She went over material, and provided good feedback regarding how our student could improve her scores. We saw a great bump in her score, and more importantly when test day arrived there were very few butterflies! Thank you Elaine!
